GHV boys golf team wins at home and on the road

It’s always fun to win at home, and that’s what the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys golf team did on Tuesday, May 2.  The Cardinals not only won, but won big, outdistancing the competition by 54 strokes.   GHV ended with a 168, followed by West Hancock with a 222 and Lake Mills finished with a 307.

Matthew Heinemann was named the medalist with a 38.

“Matthew’s game has really come along in the last two weeks,” said Coach Ken Krause.  “A great deal of hard work and practice is paying off for all of the boys.”

Grady Umbarger may have left a few shots on the course, but he still ended as runner-up with a 40.  Tyler Obermann and Josh Chizek both shot 45s to round out the Cardinal score.  Sam Umbarger shot a 49 and Tyler Kumsher finished with a 50.

Eagle Grove Meet

It was a beautiful day for golf, not only for the weather, but also for the score.  The slope of the course and the tricky greens didn’t slow the Cardinals down, as they topped Eagle Grove on Friday, May 5, by a score of 179 to 210.

Grady Umbarger’s score of 40 was good enough to name him the meet medalist.  Matthew Heinemann was the runner-up with a 42.  Heinemann played a one hole play-off with a birdie on the first hole to claim the honor.

Rounding out the score was Josh Chizek with a 48 and Sam Umbarger’s 49.  Tyler Kumsher shot a 49 and Tyler Obermann ended with a 50.

“Our other players were tight and their scores bounced between 48 and 50,” said Coach Ken Krause.

The Cardinal’s record stands at 14-6.

“With a few stroke improvement by each player, we could have a successful tournament run,” said Krause.
