GHV boys post 6-1 record
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys golf team improved their record to 6-1 in action last week.
The Cardinals beat North Union and Belmond-Klemme in a home meet held on Monday, April 11. The meet was close, with GHV topping North Union by two strokes, 175-177. Belmond-Klemme didn’t post a team score.
The Card’s success came from consistent scores on the cool and windy day. Grady Umbarger and Matthew Heinemann led the team with a 42 and 43 respectively. Parker Olsen, from North Union, was the meet medalist with a 38. Umbarger was the runner-up.
Tyler Obermann shot a solid 44, while Brandon Bell’s 46 rounded out the Cardinal’s score.
On Friday, April 15, GHV competed in a triangular at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore, Iowa. Bishop-Garrigan won the meet with a 166. The Cardinals earned runner-up status with a 179. West Hancock shot a 191.
“This was a challenging course,” said Coach Ken Krause. “Again big numbers hurt our scoring and bad swings are more costly in 25-30 mph winds. This was an important meet, since the conference meet will be played at Spring Valley this year.”
The Cardinals had their best scores of the season on Saturday, April 16, when they competed at Eagle Grove.
Jordan Babcock had a great round, carding a 37. Umbarger’s round of 38 had two doubles, while Heinemann included two triples.
“Each player scored very well on the other seven holes,” said Krause. “Tyler Obermann is becoming a solid varsity contributor, while Jake Folkers and Tyler Kumsher had their first varsity experience of the season and both performed well.”
