GHV boys posting good times
West Hancock CoEd Relay
The Cardinals traveled to Britt on Tuesday, May 2, for the West Hancock CoEd Relays. GHV finished at the bottom of the six-team meet with 48 points. Central Springs edged West Hancock by just half a point to win the meet with 137.50 points.
The Cardinals picked up the top spots in the 1600 meter run with Reece Smith winning the event in 4:37.97 and Logan Dalbeck claiming runner-up honors in 4:38.91.
GHV claimed another first place in the high jump. Keegan Sassaman-Clark tied for first by clearing 6’. He also had two fourth place finishes, one in the 100 meter dash and the other in the long jump. He clocked a 12.12 in the 100 meter dash and leaped 18’1.50” in the long jump.
Cataldo was second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.98.
The 4x200 relay team of Tyler Wilson, Fred Burnett, Sassaman-Clark and Kalen Etter were fourth in 1:44.93.
Etter, Wilson, Burnett and Nathan Larson competed in the sprint medley, claiming sixth place in 1:52.57.
Top of Iowa Conference Meet
It was a very successful day for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team when they competed in the Top of Iowa Conference meet held on Thursday, May 4, at the North Iowa Sports Complex. The Cardinals broke six season records and set a new conference record.
“The boys were willing to do what was needed to best help the team and earn points,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “They were maxed out in events and were willing to participate in relays.”
GHV tied for sixth place in the nine-team field with 47 points. Forest City won the meet with 191 points, followed by Lake Mills with 123.
The highlight of the meet was Ray Cataldo finishing first in the 800 meter run and breaking the conference record. Cataldo’s time of 2:02.95 beat the previous record of 2:03.86, set in 2016 by Forest City’s Grady Hovenga. The time ranks him at 14th in Class 2A this season.
Reece Smith and Logan Dalbeck picked up a two-three finish in the 1600 meter run. Smith was second with a time of 4:37.18 and Dalbeck was third in 4:39.92.
There was another two-three finish in the 3200 meter run. Smith finished second in 10:08.47 and Cataldo ran the race in 10:33.70.
Keegan Sassaman-Clark was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5’6”.

The 4x200 meter relay team placed seventh with a time of 1:53.76. Members of the relay were Fred Burnett, Tyler Wilson, Jason Lillebo and Kalen Etter.
The 4x800 relay and the sprint medley relay both finished in eighth place. The 4x400 team of Cataldo, Luke Brown, Derek Brown and Nathan Larson finished in 4:00.43. The sprint medley team consisted of Luke Brown, Wilson, Derek Brown and Larson. They finished in 1:50.71.
