GHV boys second at home meet
It was a successful night on the track for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys when they hosted a meet on Monday, May 5. The Cardinals finished second in the eight-team field with 117.50 points. Forest City won the meet with 129 points and Clear Lake was third with 106.50 points.
“It was great to get the opportunity to compete and host a home meet,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “The boys are continuing to improve and that is great as conference and districts are approaching.”
GHV picked up some points in the field events with a second and two third place showings. Nic Tusha placed second in the shot put with a throw of 45’5.25”. He also placed third in the discus with a toss of 118’03”. Braden Meints placed third in the high jump with a jump of 5’10”.
The Cardinals didn’t have any first place finishes, but there were of plenty of second and third place endings.
Individual second place winners included: Adam Monson in the 100 meter dash, 11.20; Nich Mehmen, 400 meter dash, 53.96; Joel Toppin, 1600 meter run, 4:47.17; and Toppin again in the 3200 meter run, 10:32.57.
Three relays placed second, including the 4x100 meter relay team, the shuttle hurdle team and the 4x200 meter relay group. The 4x100 team of Monson, Conner Shaw, Spencer Shaw and Ezra Marroquin ran the race in 45.44. The shuttle hurdle team clocked a 1:01.46. Members of that relay were Sam Cataldo, Spencer Shaw, JJ Loschen and Zac Scholl. Colton Knutson, Dylan Mahlstedt, Jimmy Ermer and Brandon Monson ran the 4x200 in 1:36.08.
Placing third for the Cardinals was Monson in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.28. Toppin was third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.14. Sam Cataldo was third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.19.
