Two more big wins last week are proving that the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys soccer team has a good chance of going deep into post-season play.

GHV 3, Denver 1

The Cardinals hosted Denver, Tuesday, May 16, for an exciting soccer match-up.  GHV topped Denver, 3-1.

“We played really well tonight,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “The young men really controlled the ball, made clean passes and played well as a team.  It may have been our best match controlled soccer of the season.”

Nick Joynt played 80 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves.

Connor Burke led the team with five shots on goal, one assist and one goal.  Also scoring goals for the Cardinals was Dane Whipple and Colton Schroeder.  Providing one assist apiece was Ryan Meyers and Seth Miller.

Whipple had two shots on goal, while Schroeder, Meyers, Jonah Albertson and Jared Graham each had one shot on goal.

GHV 3, Mason City 2

It was a real showdown on Friday, May 19, when the Cardinals hosted Mason City for Senior Night.  Despite not having the normal starting line-up due to Senior Night, GHV downed Mason City by one goal, 3-2.

“We have six seniors on the team that have all contributed a lot to the success of this team and past teams,” said Coach Eric Williams.

The two teams were evenly matched and neither team seemed to be effected by the cold, windy and rainy night.

“It wasn’t the best soccer of the season, but I was glad that we are a good enough team to still win in these types of matches,” said Williams.  “I truly love sitting back and watching this team play.”

Jared Graham had a great game for the Cards, recording two goals and three shots on goal.  He was also one-for-one on PKs.

Connor Burke scored the other goal for GHV.  He also had one assist and was one-for-two on place kicks.

Johnny O’Connor, Ryan Meyers, Dane Whipple and Jonah Albertson all had one shot on goal.

With this win, the Cardinals posted the first winning season in GHV soccer history.  The team has scored more goals this year than any other season and they have had less goals scored against them than any other season.  It was also the first time in school history that the Cardinals had beat Webster City and Clear Lake.

“It has been a year of firsts,” said Williams.
