GHV boys track team competes in two meets

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team competed in two meets last week.

Hampton-Dumont Invite

The GHV boys competed at the Hampton-Dumont Invitational on Monday, April 18.  The Cardinals placed fifth in the nine-team field with 70.50 points.  Denver won the meet with 136 points.

GHV’s long distance runners racked up some points for the team. In the 1600 meter run, the Cardinals took first and second place.  Logan Dalbeck won the race in 4:40.56, followed closely by Ray Cataldo in 4:45.98.  Another long distance runner, Reece Smith, claimed second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:25.81.  Dalbeck placed fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.22.

Sam Cataldo also did his share for the team, claiming the win in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.03 and runner-up honors in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.01.

Other place winners included:

•100 meter dash: David Cook, sixth place, 12.49

•200 meter dash: Cook, fifth place, 24.75

•High jump: Johnathan O’Connor, seventh place, 5’02”

•4x100 meter relay: Ezra Marroquin, Conner Shaw, Cook and Sam Cataldo, third place, 45.28.

•4x800 meter relay: O’Connor, Nathan Larson, Derek Brown and Ray Cataldo, fifth place, 9:13.06

•Shuttle hurdle relay: O’Connor, Cook, Holden Larson and Sam Cataldo, seventh place, 1:10.37.

Bronco Relays

Lake Mills racked up 98 points to win the Bronco Relays on Tuesday, April 19.  The Cardinals were fifth in the six-team field with 71.33.  The race was very tight, as Belmond-Klemme collected 72.66 points and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows had 73 points.

GHV had five events collect first place finishes.  Sam Cataldo had two individual first place finishes, one in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.56 and another in the 400 meter hurdles, 56.15.  Ray Cataldo also had a first place finish with a time of 2:09.56 in the 800 meter run.

Two relays claimed top honors.  The 4x800 team of Reece Smith, Ray Cataldo, Logan Dalbeck and Derek Brown won in 8:40.27.  Also winning was the distance medley team of David Cook, Johnathan O’Connor, Ezra Marroquin and Dalbeck in 3:57.16.

“It’s been impressive to watch the boys compete and try new events this year,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “With lower numbers we have had to be creative with both relays and individual events and the boys understand the need to try new events in order to score points for the team.”

Also scoring points for the team were:

•3200 meter run: Andy Schreur, second

•400 meter run: Marroquin, second, 53.39; Nathan Larson, fifth, 1:01.29

•800 meter run: Brown, second, 2:18.61

•200 meter run: Marroquin, third, 23.48

•4x100 relay: Marroquin, Conner Shaw, Cook, Sam Cataldo, second place, 46.12

•Shuttle hurdle: O’Connor, Cook, Holden Larson, Sam Cataldo, fourth place, 1:09.93
