GHV boys track team continues to improve
Gerry Lenguadoro Cadets Relays
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team has strong long distance runners, but this week a sprinter and field event athlete stepped up when the Cardinals competed at the Gerry Lenguardoro Cadet Relays in Iowa Falls on Tuesday, April 11.
GHV’s Keegan Sassman picked up seven team points in field events. Sassman finished fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5’8”. He also placed in the long jump, with a leap of 18’2.25”, good for sixth place. Sassman also placed in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 12.23.
The 3200 meter run was the Cardinals strongest race, with Reece Smith claiming the top spot in 9:50.63. Ray Cataldo placed fourth with a time of 10:21.30.
The 4x800 meter relay was the only relay to place. Running the race was Logan Dalbeck, Nathan Larson, Luke Brown and Derek Brown. The team placed fourth with a time of 11:00.04. The race was very tight, with West Hancock winning in 11:00.01. North Butler was eighth in 11:00.08.
GHV finished in eighth place in the 10-team field with 30 points. Iowa Falls-Alden won the meet with 156 points and Aplington Parkersburg was second with 128 points.
“The boys are continuing to improve. We had nine personal records set on Tuesday,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.
Lake Mills Meet
The Cardinals competed in Lake Mills on Thursday, April 13. GHV placed seventh in the 10-team field with 26 points.

Lake Mills won the meet with 153.5 points and West Hancock was the runner-up with 131.5 points.
Keegan Sassman placed in three events for the Cardinals. He won the high jump, clearing 5’8”. He also placed fifth in the long jump, leading 18’7”. In the 200 meter dash he placed eighth with a time of 25.27.
Ray Cataldo was third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:06.47.
Nathan Larson placed sixth in the 1600 meter run in 5:18.34.
Fred Burnett was eighth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.85.
The only relay team to place was the distance medley team of Sassman, Tyler Wilson, Larson and Derek Brown. The group placed eighth with a time of 4:23.51.
