GHV cross country boys win Newman Invitational; Clear Lake is runner-up
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys ran away with the title at the Newman Catholic Invitational held Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Mason City. The Cardinals placed all five of their runners in the top six to win with 19 points. Clear Lake was runner-up with 66 points. Mason City was a distant third with 91 points.
GHV’s Chase Smith won the Invitational with a time of 16:30. The Cardinals captured the third through sixth placements, with Reese Smith, finishing third in a time of 17:34, Logan Dalbeck ran the race in 17:46, followed by Ray Cataldo, 17:52 and Derek Brown in 17:54. Austin Siegrist was 13th with a time of 18:33. Also running varsity for the Cards was Parker Schneiders who finished 52nd with a time of 21:04.
“The boys ran well for this time of the year,” said GHV Coach Jeff Short. “We need to continue to work hard so we are ready to run at the end of the season.”
Clear Lake’s Ryan Faught and Eric Faught placed seventh and eighth running 17:55 and 18:04 respectively. Sam Pedelty and Ike Branstad were 14th and 15th in 18:36 and 18:51. Spencer Orr came in 22nd in 19:09 to round out Clear Lake’s scoring. Sam Jones also participated in the varsity race, placing 30th in 19:46.
“This is the first year in a long time that we can actually run as a team,” said Clear Lake Coach Nick DiMarco. “We have had several very good individual runners the past few years, but we have not had enough to attack other teams as a group. Ryan Faught continues to lead our team during races and we have a fantastic group of senior runners that are really taking a strong leadership role. This excellent combination is helping us become the best team that we can be.”

Clear Lake’s junior varsity team captured the team title in the JV competition. The Lions narrowly defeated GHV, 45 to 47.
The Lions were led by Kaleb Froiland, who finished third in 20:14. Jacob Wessels was seventh in 20:37 and Lewis Callaway palced 10th in 20:44. Jonah Pedelty and Dylan Schuchard came in 11th and 14th respectively in 20:55 and 21:14.
GHV’s Jared Graham and Jacob Meier finished first and second in 19:41 and 20:10. Andrew Scheur was fourth for the Cards in 20:14, followed by Derek Anderson in 19th in 21:48 and Austin Case, 21st in 21:55.
“The JV boys have great attitudes and many of them are running varsity type times,” said Clear Lake Coach Nick DiMarco.
