It was a tough way to start the season, when the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls basketball team traveled to Mason City on Tuesday, Nov. 17, to face the Mohawks in the Hall of Pride Scrimmage. Mason City dominated the Cardinals in a 61-13 romp.

The Mohawks rolled in the first quarter, racking up 21 points, while holding the Cards to 0.  Mikaya Shropshire got GHV on the board with a free throw in the beginning of the second quarter.  Hannah Lau scored and Jillian Heitland made one from the free throw line for a half time score of 35-5.

The Mohawk defense was too much for the Cardinals, as they held them to only eight points in the second half for a final score of 61-13.

Starting for the Cardinals was Lau, Heitland, Payton Bamrick, Taryn Carolus and Miranda Jackson.

Lau had five points, followed by Maddie Williams with four, Bamrick had two points and Heitland and Shropshire each had one point.

Lau grabbed three steals to lead the team.  Shropshire, Carolus, Jenna Hanson and Jackson each had one steal.

Jackson recorded the team’s only assist.
