GHV girls basketball team falls to Mason City in Hall of Pride Scrimmage

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team kicked off the 2014-15 season by playing in the Hall of Pride Scrimmage Monday night, Nov. 17, against Mason City.

The Mohawks had the home court advantage and won the contest, 50-43.

The Cardinals got off to a good start and led until late in the second quarter.  A couple of starters left the game due to injuries and GHV had a hard time recovering.

“I was very happy with the way we played,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “Several girls got valuable minutes due to those injuries, which will help us as the season progresses.”

The Cardinals were strong under the boards, out-rebounding the Mohawks 42-29.  Turnovers, however, plagued GHV as they collected 27.  Most turnovers came from inexperience handling the ball under pressure.

“I saw a lot of good things out of my girls and we saw the areas we need to improve on in the upcoming weeks,” said Erpelding.

The GHV girls have a North Iowa Conference matchup at Eagle Grove on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
