GHV girls battle windy conditions on the links
by Michelle Watson
Despite some high winds and a lack of practice, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls posted a decent score at the Lake Mills golf meet on Monday, April 15. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough, as they finished last in the meet by three strokes to runner-up West Hancock. Lake Mills shot a 218, while West Hancock shot a 227 and GHV finished with 230.
“I’m not disappointed with the scores considering it was a pretty windy day and we hadn’t practiced since last Tuesday,” said Coach Todd Greiman.
Carlee Frayne had an exceptional meet, finishing as the meet medalist with a 44.
“The younger girls are starting to gradually cut a few strokes off of their scores and I’m optimistic that trend will continue,” said Greiman.
Rounding out the score was Jailyn Krein with a 60, Kelsey Watson shot a 62, and Rylee Frayne finished with a 64. Also golfing was Jamie Hejlik with a 68 and Bailey Johnson shot a 69.
“Some nice weather would be welcome right now,” said Greiman. “We need to get some quality practice time on the golf course.”
GHV 215, West Fork 265
With nice weather, comes nice scores for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls golf team. The Cardinals topped West Fork, 215-265, on Tuesday, April 16.
“It was a nice night to play golf and the scores reflected that,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “We were able to shoot our team low of the season with five of the six girls carding their best scores of the year.”
Carlee Frayne led the team, carding a 41. The next three scores were very close, with Krein shooting a 57, Watson shot a 58 and Rylee Frayne was right in the mix with a 59. Also golfing for GHV was Jamie Hejlik with a 62 and Bailey Johnson with a 74.
“It was good to see improvement and I look forward to more of the same as we continue,” said Greiman.
Triangular
The Cardinals kept up their winning ways, with a triangular on Thursday, April 18. GHV won the meet with a 233, followed by West Hancock with 237 and Eagle Grove finished with a 247.
“Our score dropped a bit from our previous outing, but considering the cold, windy conditions, I am not surprised by that,” said Greiman.
Carlee Frayne was consistent and shot another 41 to lead the team. Rylee Frayne was second for the team with a 58. Rounding out the team score was Johnson with a 66 and Watson finished with a 68. Hejlik also golfed and she finished with a 70.
“Once we can eliminate the occasional bad holes their scores will become more competitive,” said Greiman. “Overall, I’m pleased with the growth and I look forward to showing improvement each time out.”
