GHV girls claim TIC title; Frayne earns medalist honors

Despite some very wet, very windy conditions on Monday, May 9, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls claimed their fourth consecutive Top of Iowa (West) Conference girls golf title, with a score of 384.  Eagle Grove was second in the nine-team competition with a 422.

“When we arrived at school on Monday, I don’t think anyone expected us to actually have the tournament,” said Coach Todd Greiman.  “When the girls learned that we would, in fact, be playing, they set their minds to overcome the weather and use their mental toughness to their advantage.”

That attitude paid off by outdistancing their nearest competitor by 38 strokes.

The Cardinals also had the top two golfers, with Bailee Frayne claiming medalist honors and Kyleigh Slaichert finishing as runner-up.  Frayne shot a 44-41-85 and Slaichert fired a 43-45-88.  Rachel Enright and Paige Penning both played their best golf of the season.  Enright was sixth with a 50-50-100, while Penning rounded out the score with a 57-54-111.  Also golfing was Kat Groom, 67-66-133, and Kayla Madsen, 86-73-159.

“Our rounds of 194 followed by 190 were the best scores of the season for us and that was incredible considering the course is a par 38 and the weather was absolutely brutal,” said Greiman.  “I couldn’t be prouder of this group of great, young ladies.”

In addition to claiming medalist honors, Frayne was also selected by the coaches as the Conference Player of the Year.
