GHV girls compete in three track meets last week
It was a very busy week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls track team as they competed in three meets.
Cowgirl Relays
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls track team may have finished at the bottom of the six-team pack at the Cowgirl Relays on Tuesday, April 12, but some of the events placed well. Pocahontas Area/LB won the meet with 336 points. GHV finished with 168 points.
“We’re heading in the right direction. We had several personal bests and many girls are reaching or getting close to their season goals,” said Coach Dyan Childress.
Jillian Heitland racked up some team points by finishing second in the 400 meter hurdles in 75.54 and sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.92.
Jayden Hughes and Leah Meinders finished second and fourth in the 100 meter dash with times of 13.78 and 13.9 respectively.
Sadie Oulman finished fourth in the 400 meter dash in 64.54.
In field events, Emma Whelan cleared 4’4” in the high jump for a third place finish, while Amanda Bierle leaped 13’9” in the long jump for fifth place.
In the long distance races, Rebekah Larson ran the 3000 meter run in 13:01.82 and Hannah Wellik ran the 1500 meter run in 6:07.99. Both girls placed fifth.
The Cardinals had two relay teams place third. The Sprint Medley relay of Amanda Bierle, Meinders, Oulman and Jacki Van Oort ran the race in 2:03.28. The 4x400 team of Maddie Williams, Van Oort, Mara Anderson and Oulman ran the race in 4:33.86.
The Distance Medley team placed fourth with a time of 5:07.18. Members of the relay were Trinity Smith, Whelan, Droste Hennings and Hannah Lau.
GHV had three relay teams that were disqualified.
“I’d rather have them DQed now than later in the season. We’ll work out those kinks and move on to the next meet,” said Childress.

North Iowa Lady Bison Relays
The Cardinals finished in the middle of the pack at the North Iowa Lady Bison Relays held on Thursday, April 14. GHV finished in fourth place in the six-team field with 93 points.
Collecting top honors for GHV with first place finishes was Jillian Heitland in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.73 and Nicole Upmeyer in the 3000 meter run with a time of 14:01.17.
Earning second place honors was Amanda Bierle in the long jump with a leap of 14’02.50”. Three relay teams also collected second place finishes. The 4x100 meter relay team of Jayden Hughes, Leah Meinders, Bierle and Sadie Oulman ran the race in 54.15. The shuttle hurdle team crossed the line in 1:13.52. Members of the shuttle hurdle team was Miranda Jackson, Maddie Williams, Mara Anderson and Jillian Heitland. The sprint medley team of Hughes, Meinders, Bierle and Oulman ran the race in 2:00.01.
Heitland and Anderson both placed in the 400 meter hurdles. Heitland was third with a time of 1:14.64 and Anderson was fifth in 1:16.59.
Emma Whelan was third in the high jump, clearing 4’08”.
In the 100 meter dash, Hughes and Meinders both placed. Hughes was fourth with a time of 14.01, while Meinders placed fifth in 14.22.
A fifth place finish went to Williams in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:08.56. The 4x800 meter relay team and the distance medley team also placed fifth. The 4x800 team of Whelan, Droste Hennings, Hannah Whelan and Maddie Schoneman ran the race in 12:51.36. The distance medley team Whelan, Rebekah Larson, Nicole Upmeyer and Hannah Wellik crossed the line in 5:39.04.
BGHS Girls’ Relays
The GHV girls did well against some tough competition at the BGHS Girls’ Relays held in Algona on Friday, April 15. The Cardinals placed fourth with 74 points. Algona ran away with the meet with 184.50 points.
Earning points for the Cards in field events was Emma Whelan and Hannah Lau in the high jump. Whelan was fourth with a jump of 4’06” and Lau was fifth, clearing 4’04”. Amanda Bierle placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14’09”.
Earning individual points was Jayden Hughes in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.44, good for a third place finish. Jillian Heitland and Miranda Jackson both placed in the 100 meter hurdles. Heitland was second with a time of 16.89, while Jackson was fifth in 17.47. Hannah Whelan was third in the 3000 meter run with a time of 13:21.20. Heitland was also third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.54.
Relays that earned team points included the following: 4x100 meter relay of Hughes, Leah Meinders, Bierle and Jackie Van Oort, fourth place, 55.00; 4x400 meter relay of Maddie Williams, Mara Anderson, Van Oort and Sadie Oulman, fifth place, 4:27.91; 4x800 meter relay, Droste Hennings, Nicole Upmeyer, Maddie Schoneman and Emma Whelan, fourth place, 12:16.46; shuttle hurdle relay Jackson, Williams, Anderson and Heitland, second place, 1:12.33; sprint medley team of Hughes, Meinders, Bierle, Oulman, second, 1:59.85; and the distance medley team of Oulman, Bierle, Van Oort and Williams won the event in 4:45.55.
