GHV girls drop three games
It was a tough week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team, as they moved their record to 1-5 with three losses.
Forest City 12, GHV 0
It was an uphill battle the entire game for the Cardinals on Wednesday, May 30, as they were shut-out by Forest City, 12-0.
The Indians got things going early, smacking a triple in the first inning that brought in a runner. They also scored on a walk to go up, 2-0. Forest City went on to score two more runs in the third inning. It was the fifth inning that got out of hand for the Cardinals, as Forest City got eight runs across the plate to end the game, 12-0.
Megan Oetken and Nicole Upmeyer were the only Cardinals that managed to get hits in the game. Oetken went two-for-three, while Upmeyer connected on one hit.
“We are hitting the ball, we are just hitting the ball right at people,” said Coach Kaitlin Murphy. “I have stressed to the girls to keep putting the ball in play and good things will happen.”
Kylie Hughes was on the mound GHV. She pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out one and walking one. Maddie Graham threw four and one-third innings. She gave up seven hits and struck out four.
“Tonight Forest City played excellent defense and unfortunately we couldn’t get anything to fall. A big thing we are missing are those key hits in big situations As always, we learn from it and go get the next one.”

A strong pitcher and a Humboldt team that could connect at bat proved to be too much for the Cardinals. They fell 5-0 on Thursday, May 31.
The Wildcat pitcher allowed no hits and no runs over seven inning, striking out 12 and walking one. Humboldt also totaled 10 hits in the game, compared to none for the Cardinals.
“Our defense made a few heads-up plays that kept us in the game,” said Coach Kaitlin Murphy. “We have to find a way to get on base. Right now we have a few girls seeing the ball well at the plate, but we’re not there yet.”
Maddie Graham took the loss, tossing all seven innings. She gave up five runs on 10 hits.
“Maddie had her best outing of the season tonight. She moved the ball around the plate and allowed her defense to make plays behind her,” said Murphy.
Murphy said fatigue was setting in on her players, especially her pitchers, since they have played five games in a row.
“My pitchers are pushing through and trusting their teammates behind them,” said Murphy.
B-K 6, GHV 5
The Cardinals held a solid lead through three innings, before Belmond-Klemme picked up two runs in the sixth inning to capture a 6-5 victory on Friday, June 1.
B-K scored the first run of the game in the second inning. The Cardinals fired back with a whopping five runs in the third inning. Sadie Oulman, Nicole Upmeyer and Jillian Heitland were hitting well and moved runners across the plate.
The Broncos picked up two more runs in the fourth inning to come to within one run, 5-4. A solid sixth inning, where they plated two more runs, put them up, 6-5. GHV was not able to pick up any more runs in the seventh and the game ended with Belmond-Klemme having the upper hand.
Maddie Graham took the loss for GHV. She gave up six runs on nine hits and she struck out 10 batters.
Heitland, Jayden Hughes and Trinity Smith all had two hits apiece.
