GHV girls fall in OT; top Humboldt

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team picked up two wins and dropped a match in overtime in action last week.

Webster City 3, GHV 2 (OT)

The third time was not a charm for the GHV girls, as they dropped a very close match in overtime to Webster City on Monday, May 18.  The Lynx topped the Cardinals, 3-2.

“Webster City is a good team.  The wind was horrible and you could tell each half who had the advantage,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Our girls played well, but just could not get the win.”

Emily Spilman had a fantastic game for the Cards, scoring both of GHV’s goals.  She also had five shots on goal.

“Emily again proved to be one of the best forwards in the state.  She is really turning it on at the right time,” said Banse.

Goalie Sam Betz had nine saves for GHV.

GHV 4, Humboldt 1

On Thursday, May 21, the Cardinals traveled to Humboldt and picked up a solid 4-1 victory over the Wildcats.

“We played well as a team and are starting to put together some great runs on offense,” said Coach Josh Banse.

Once again, Emily Spilman had a stellar game scoring her sixth goal of the week.  Also scoring for the Cardinals was Hannah Lau, Autumn Weaver and Jacki Van Ooort.  Van Oort also recorded an assist.  GHV had 14 shots on goal as a team.

Sam Betz and Morgan Westendorf shared goalie duties.  Betz had two saves, while Westendorf recorded three saves.

“Defensively it took us a while to get going, but they got it together and put a great game in the books,” said Banse.  “Overall it was a great week.”
