GHV girls fall to Warriors
Poor shooting doomed the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls on Friday, Jan. 8, when they hosted North Union (5-3, 8-3).
“We shot the ball terrible from both the field and the free throw line,” said Coach Matt Erpelding. “We got numerous open looks from the perimeter, but simply couldn’t knock them down. Half of our field goal attempts came from the three-point line, which isn’t what you would like.”
The Cardinals held strong in the first quarter, only trailing by one, 7-6. In the second quarter, the team went four minutes without scoring, while North Union dumped in 17 points to go up, 24-11. Mara Anderson connected on a free throw and Jillian Heitland picked up a field goal to go into the half down by 10, 24-14.
GHV came back and put in nine quick points and got to with seven points, 30-23. From there is was another scoring drought for the Cardinals. They went 10 minutes without a bucket, allowing the Warriors to gain a huge lead, 52-23. Jade Hanson finally sunk a field goal and the final points were scored by GHV on free throws for the final score, 52-28.
“We continue to commit too many unforced turnovers. As a coach, by this point in the season you would hope we could focus enough that we wouldn’t be committing turnovers like that anymore,” said Erpelding. “I did feel like we played much better than we were before the Christmas break, however. We are doing a better job of rebounding fundamentally and our offensive flow was pretty good.”
Jillian Heitland led the team with eight points. She was 2/7 from three-point line. She also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Rounding out the scoring was Payton Bamrick with five, Maddie Williams added four and Mara Anderson and Miranda Jackson had three points apiece. Hanson and Hannah Lau each had two points and Jenna Hanson scored one point.
Bamrick led the team in rebounds with seven. Taryn Carolus grabbed five and Lau had four rebounds.
Lau led the team in steals with four and she had two blocked shots.
Jackson led the team in assists with three and she had one steal. Williams had two steals.
GHV (2-6, 3-8) travels to Forest City on Friday, Jan. 15. Game time is 6:15 p.m.
