GHV girls golf team rolling over competition
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls golf team is rolling, picking up three wins last week and earning medalist honors at all three.
Home Meet
The Cardinals won their home meet on Monday, April 11, against North Union and Belmond-Klemme. GHV carded a 207, while North Union recorded a 240 and Belmond-Klemme ended with a 282.
“Monday’s weather was brutal, with very cold temperatures and some icy wind,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “Kyleigh and Bailee played remarkable considering the conditions.”
Kyleigh Slaichert led the Cardinals with a 43. Bailee Frayne was only two strokes behind her with a 45. Rounding out GHV’s score was Kat Groom with a 58 and Paige Penning with a 61. Rachel Enright and Kayla Leerar recorded a 66 and 69 respectively.
“This was one of our better scores of the season, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said Greiman.
Spring Valley Meet
GHV rolled over the competition in Spring Valley on Friday, April 15. The Cards took the top spot by a margin of 37 strokes with a score of 216. Bishop Garrigan was second with a 253, followed by West Hancock with a 283.
In addition to the team’s success, GHV’s Bailee Frayne also had a remarkable day. She claimed medalist honors with a 39, which was the lowest score of the day by any boy or girl playing.
“Bailee adjusted very well to the strong winds and slick greens and carded the best score of the day,” said Coach Todd Greiman.
The tough weather conditions led to higher scores than the coach would have liked to see. Kyleigh Slaichert carded a 48, while Paige Penning and Rachel Enright ended with a 64 and 65 respectively. Kayla Leerar carded a 73 and Cassie Eichmann ended with a 76.
Eagle Grove Meet
Once again the Cardinals captured the top spot at Eagle Grove on Saturday, April 16. GHV ended with a 211, while Eagle Grove shot a 222.
Bailee Frayne and Kayleigh Slaichert led the team with a 44 and 47 respectively. Paige Penning carded a 58, while Rachel Enright shot a 62. Also golfing was Kayla Leerar with a 67 and Cassie Eichmann shot a 69.
“As expected, Bailee and Kayleigh played pretty well on another windy day,” said Coach Todd Greiman. “Paige is beginning to show noticeable improvement and I’m confident that the other girls will start to come around soon.”
The team has a perfect 6-0 record.
