The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls soccer team picked up two big wins last week.

GHV 3, Aplington-Parkersburg 2

With a never give-up attitude, the Cardinals found a way to top a very good Aplington-Parkersburg team on Tuesday, April 26.

“A-P is always really well coached and skilled,” said Coach Josh Banse.  “Our play in the second half was the difference.  We just decided that we were not going to lose.”

Payton Echelberger scored two goals for GHV, while Hannah Lau added one.

Autumn Weaver had a good game, with six shots on goal. Payton Bamrick, Jacki Van Oort and Echelberger each had two shots on goal, while Lau had one.

Morgan Westendorf had nine saves at goalie.

Coach Banse praised the defensive play of Emily Howke, who had never played defense before and did a great job filling in.

“This was a great team win,” said Banse.

GHV 3, Humboldt 1

Another great team effort led to a 3-1 victory over Humboldt on Thursday, April 28.

“We once again did not have our dual athletes for this game and the girls responded well,” said Banse.  “It took us until the second half to really get going, but when we did it was fun to watch.”

Scoring one goal apiece was Payton Echelberger, Payton Bamrick and Ashlee Diaz.

Autumn Weaver had one assist.

Weaver had five shots on goal, while Bamrick had four.  Diaz recorded two shots on goal and Echelberger and Tehya Mitchell each had one.

Goalie Morgan Westendorf had six saves.

“If we can put two halves together like our second half, we could be real dangerous.  We are taking the right steps in the right direction,” said Banse.
