GHV girls pound North Iowa; fall to FC

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls had a week of ups and downs, as they trounced North Iowa, but fell hard to Forest City.

GHV 62, North Iowa 16

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a dominating win on the road against North Iowa on Tuesday night, Nov. 27.

The Cardinals put forth a strong team effort to take a 16-0 lead to open the game.  GHV’s defense only gave up one point in the first quarter, 18-1.

Maddie Williams dumped in eight straight points in the second quarter, helping the Cardinals to a 39-10 halftime lead.

Strong defense in the third quarter shut down North Iowa’s offense.  GHV outscored the Bison, 11-0, for a 50-10 lead at the end of the third quarter.

GHV cleared the bench with five minutes remaining in the game.  The subs also did a nice job, scoring eight points, behind a three-point shot by Macey Spilman.  The Cards ended the slaughter with a 62-16 victory.

It was turnovers that sealed North Iowa’s fate, as the Cardinals scored 39-points off Bison miscues.

Williams led the team in a number of categories.  She racked up 10-points, four steals and four assists.  She also grabbed five rebounds.

Nicole Upmeyer was 2/3 from the three-point arc.  She ended the night with nine points and three rebounds.  She also had four steals.

Other leading scorers for the Cardinals included Jade Hanson and Chloe Frank with eight points apiece.  Morgan Ryerson ended with five points and Vanessa Olson and Mykenzie Darg had four points apiece.

Jayden Frank led the team in rebounds with seven, she also grabbed three steals. Jade Hanson pulled down four rebounds, while Ryerson and Darg had three apiece.

Chloe Frank, Jayden Frank and Jenna Hanson had one blocked shot each.

Forest City 44, GHV 25

Cold shooting doomed the Cardinal girls to a 44-25 loss to Forest City on Friday, Nov. 30.

Chloe Frank opened the scoring for GHV with a three-point shot.  That was followed by an eight-point run by the Indians to give them a 12-3 lead.  Maddie Williams pumped in five points at the end of the quarter to move to within four points, 12-8.

Forest City went on a seven point run to open the second quarter, 21-13.  Williams hit a free-throw to end the first half, 21-14.

Scoring was at a minimum for both teams, with neither team scoring in the first minute of the second half.  The Indians outscored the Cardinals 12-7 in the third quarter, 33-21.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, with Forest City picking up 11 more points, while holding GHV to only four fourth quarter points for the final, 44-25.

Williams led the team with 10-points, nine of them off three-point shots. Chloe Frank was close behind with eight points.  Rounding out the scoring was Jayden Frank with four, Mykenzie Darg with two and Jenna Hanson scored one.

Williams also led the team under the boards with five rebounds.  Chloe Frank, Jayden Frank, Mara Anderson and Jade Hanson all had three rebounds.

Jade Hanson grabbed two steals and Williams had two blocked shot.
