GHV girls record personal best times
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows
Despite finishing at the bottom of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows meet held on Tuesday, April 11, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls had a lot to celebrate. They recorded many personal best times and finished in the top on some events. Pocahontas Area won the meet with 365 points, followed by Iowa Falls-Alden with 277 points. GHV finished with 181 points.
Jayden Hughes had a stellar night, capturing two first place finishes. She was first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.2 and in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.56.
“Jayden winning two events was a huge highlight for us,” said Coach Dyan Childress.
Rachel Hejlik placed second in the shot put with a throw of 33’6.25”.
Third place finishes went to Hannah Whelan in the 3000 run with a time of 12:40.33 and to Maddie Hinz in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.77. The sprint medley team placed third in 2:04.67. Members of the relay were Hughes, Jillian Heitland, Mara Anderson and Hinz. The shuttle hurdle team of Anderson, Hinz, Hejlik and Heitland was also third in 1:14.45.
“The girls are ready to break their goals and can’t wait for the next meet,” said Childress.

*4x100 - Hughes, Hinz, Anderson, Rebekah Larson. fifth, 64.17
*3000 meter run - Larson, sixth, 13:12.78
*Distance Medley - Emma Whelan, Rachel Sokol, Nicole Upmeyer, Hannah Wellik, sixth, 5:27.33
*4x400 - Sokol, Wellik, Whelan, Larson, sixth, 5:26.19
North Iowa Meet
The GHV girls brought home some gold from the North Iowa meet held on Thursday, April 13. The Cards placed fourth in the six-team field with 97 points. Central Springs won the meet with 148 points and Forest City was the runner-up with 114 points.
Bringing home first place finishes was Hannah Whelan in the 3000 meter with a time of 12:25.56; Jillian Heitland won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:04.32; Jayden Hughes won both the 100 meter dash in 13.59 and the 200 meter dash in 27.86; and the 4x100 meter relay team of Mara Anderson, Heitland, Maddie Hinz and Hughes claimed the top spot in 54.96.
Rebekah Larson earned runner-up honors in the 1500 meter run. She completed the race in 5:57.10.
Earning third place finishes was Whelan in the high jump with a jump of 4’6” and Heitland in the 100 meter hurdles, 17.87.
