GHV girls set school records

by Michelle Watson

It was a night for school records, as the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls set two Tuesday night, Dec. 18, when they hosted Eagle Grove (1-5, 1-7).  The team broke the number of points scored in a quarter at 32, and the number of points scored in a half at 52.

“They are starting to gain confidence in what we are trying to do offensively and defensively,” said Coach Matt Frank.  “This was a good team win, with all 14 players seeing action.”

The Cardinals came out ready to play in the first quarter, putting in 32-points.  Jayden Frank led the charge with nine-points alone.

She kept it rolling in the second quarter, sinking back-to-back baskets to take a 36-12 lead.  The Card’s defense held the Eagles to just six-points in the second quarter, while they poured in 20 for a whopping 52-18 lead at the half.

The scoring onslaught slowed down in the third quarter with GHV only scoring seven.  The defense was still tough, however, allowing only three points.

The bench was cleared in the fourth quarter, allowing some quality minutes for everyone.  The Cards rolled to an easy 69-36 victory.

“Our goal was to finish this week with two strong outings going into break.  My message was for the girls not to look at Eagle Grove’s 1-6 record and to play selfishly, but to play as a team and they did,” said Frank.

Jayden Frank had the best game of her career, dumping in 25-points.  She was 2/4 from the three point line and a solid 11/14 on field goals.  She also led the team in rebounds with six and steals with six.

Also reaching double figure scoring was Maddie Williams with 11-points and Chloe Frank with 10-points.  Jade Hanson had seven points.

Other rebound leaders included Morgan Ryerson with four boards, and  Chloe Frank, Hanson, and Mara Anderson with three rebounds apiece.

Ryerson led the team in assists with four and Nicole Upmeyer dished out three.

Chloe Frank and Hanson had two blocked shots apiece.

The team heads into the holiday break with a 5-2, 5-3 record.
