GHV girls stuggling

With one of their top players out of action, the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls are struggling.  They dropped two more games last week.

Bishop Garrgian 67, GHV 17

Talk about a game full of adversity.  The GHV girls had a night where nothing could go right, as Bishop Garrigan (4-0, 4-1) dominated the Cardinals on Tuesday, Dec. 15.

“With Hannah Lau being out, we continue to struggle rebounding the ball and getting quality shot attempts,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.

The Golden Bears went on an 11-point run early in the first quarter and never looked back.  B-G held the Cardinals to just 10 first quarter points and took a huge 36-10 lead into halftime.

The second half saw no improvements for the Cards.  The Golden Bear’s defense squelched GHV’s offense, holding them to just seven points in the second half.  The final score was 67-17.

“They had two very good players who both shot the ball well.  We, on the other hand, settled for rushed perimeter shots too often and as a result only shot 18 percent from the field,” said Erpelding.

GHV did not have one dominate person who could score.  Jade Hanson led the team with five-points.  Maddie Williams had four-points, while Miranda Jackson added three and Taryn Carolus and Jillian Heitland had one bucket each.  Payton Bamrick made one free throw.  Jackson made the only three point shot for the Cardinals.

Jackson and Heitland led the team under the boards, with six and five rebounds respectively.  Williams and Mikaya Shropshire had three rebounds apiece.

Shropshire had three steals for the team, while Heitland had three blocked shots.

Lake Mills 71, GHV 36

Too many extra possessions cost the Cardinals a game against Lake Mills (3-2, 6-2) at home on Friday, Dec. 18.    Giving up too many offensive rebounds, coupled with 32-turnovers makes it tough to win a game.

The Bulldogs went into the half with a 53-21 lead.  The second half was a little bit closer, with Lake Mills outscoring GHV only 18-15.  The first half deficit was too much to overcome as the Cardinals fell, 71-36.

“We had a couple mental breakdowns that allowed their shooters to gain confidence and everything snowballed on us,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.  “We were able to put our finger on what is holding this team back, now it is just a matter of how the girls respond.”

Jade Hanson had a break-out game, collecting 12-points and five rebounds to lead the team.  Maddie Williams also had a good game, with seven-points, three rebounds and five steals.

Carolus added four-points and Jillian Heitland and Miranda Jackson had three-points each.

Carolus grabbed five rebounds and Williams and Jackson each had three boards.
