GHV 9, Webster City 1
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls gained the confidence they needed when they downed Webster City, 9-1, on Tuesday, April 11.
“I thought we needed a game like this,” said Coach Josh Banse. “We played well as a team. Our control was great and communication was great ,as well. All our players are starting to click together.”
Banse praised the play of his defense, Bretta Carolus, Carlie Knutson, Brooklyn Laird, which he said is all doing a fabulous job.
The team also welcomed back Mackenzie Van Gerpen, who hasn’t played in a game for two years. She came back with a vengeance and scored two goals for the Cardinals.
Hannah Lau also had a good game, scoring three goals and collecting three assists. Jacki Van Oort was also solid with two goals and one assist.
Alison Johnson and Payton Echelberger each had one goal.
Morgan Westendorf had five saves as goalie.
Mason City 4, GHV 3 (OT)
The Cardinals dropped a heartbreaker Thursday night, April 13, when they hosted Mason City. A late Mohawk goal in overtime foiled GHV’s chance for an upset. They fell 4-3 in overtime.
“We went into the game focusing on stopping their top player, Kiki O’Neill, and I think we did that since she didn’t a score a goal. The downside of focusing on one player is that others step up,” said Coach Josh Banse. “It was a learning curve for me as a coach and also for the athletes.”
The game came down to overtime play, with Mason City having

“I thought Morgan took another step in the right direction as a goalie,” said Banse.
Banse also praised the determination and work ethic of Jacki Van Oort.
“She works hard everyday and this day was no different,” said Banse.
Hannah Lau scored two of GHV’s goals and Alison Johnson recorded the other.
