GHV runners off to the blue oval
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team qualified three individuals to compete on the blue oval at the State Track meet this week. The Cardinals hosted the Class 2A Qualifying Track Meet on Thursday, May 11.
Reece Smith, a sophomore, will be competing in both the 1600 and the 3200 meter runs. Smith won both of the events. He clocked 4:28.85 in the 1600 meter run and 10:02.40 in the 3200.
Ray Cataldo, a junior, will also be competing in two events. He was runner-up in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:21.65 and was third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:03.89.
Logan Dalbeck, a senior, was the runner-up to Smith in the 1600 meter run. He ran the race in 4:38.19.
“The boys have a tremendous work ethic,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “Every practice they come ready to challenge and encourage each other. All three are ready to compete at the State level this week.”
Keegan Sassaman-Clark was the only other GHV athlete to earn points in the meet. Sassaman-Clark was seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.14. He also placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 5’8”.
The Cardinals finished in ninth place in the 12-team competition with 48 points. Forest City won the meet with 143 points and Central Springs was the runner-up with 85 points.
