GHV trounces Clear Lake

Emily Spilman scored three goals to lead a Garner-Hayfield/Ventura attack against the Clear Lake Lions Tuesday, May 19.  The Cardinals posted a 5-1 win.

“I felt we played a bit tentative in the first half. We didn’t challenge the ball effectively and we allowed too many Garner girls to split our defensive back line,” said Clear Lake Coach Nick DiMarco.

The aggressive GHV play put the Cardinals ahead, 4-0 at half-time.

“I was concerned how the girls would respond after a tough loss on Monday night,” said GHV Coach Josh Banse.  “They responded by really playing aggressive and as a team.  The offense share the ball really well and attacked the whole game.  Our defense of Riannan Kadirlik, Brooklyn Laird, Autumn Prehn, Rachel Sokol, Mack Haag and Sam Betz played outstanding, in my opinion.”

Coach DiMarco made adjustments at halftime and Clear Lake played more aggressively in the second half.

The changes helped the Lions to score first in the second half, as Erin O’Tool scored off of a beautiful pass from Kaye Faber. The play began with Krystle Lu making a nice move before putting the ball off to Faber.

In addition to Spilman’s three goals, Payton Bamrick scored a goal and had an assist for the Cards.  Ali Scott also scored and Autum Weaver was credit with an assist.

Morgan Westendorf had five saves for GHV, while Betz had one.

The Cardinals took 18 shots on goal as a team.

Clear Lake goalie Ellie Biebesheimer ended the night with 13 saves.
