GHV volleyball team moves record to 4-5

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team moved their record to 4-5, with a win and a loss in regular play and a record of 2-2 from the Belmond-Klemme tournament played on Saturday.

GHV 3, Belmond-Klemme 2

It took five games to determine the winner when GHV faced Belmond-Klemme on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The Broncos won the first game, 25-17.  The Cards fought hard in the second game and squeaked out a 25-22 victory.  The Cardinals also won the third game, 25-19.  Belmond-Klemme wasn’t about to give up, as they battled their way to a 26-24 win in game four.  The final game was all GHV.  They cruised to a 15-6 win and the match victory.

“The girls came out strong in set five and capitalized on their play to win the match,” said Coach Kelsey Edwards.

That strength shown through at the net.  Erica Eenhuis led the team with eight kills.  Chloe Frank knocked down five, while  Jayden Frank had six, and Morgan Ryerson slammed seven.  Megan Eastman ended the game with four kills to her credit.

Jamie Hejlik had a phenomenal defensive effort with 16 digs.  Both Eenhuis and Tori Sloan had seven kills apiece.  Maddie Graham and Eastman had three digs each.

Frank led the team at the service line with a whopping seven ace serves.  She was 15/18 and accounted for 11-points.  Hejlik served a perfect 17/17, with two ace serves and eight points.  Graham also had a solid night, serving 19/20, with two aces and nine points.  Eenhuis was 12/15, with two aces and six points.  Maddie Williams ended the night serving 15/17, with eight points and one ace.

Bishop Garrigan 3, GHV 0

The Cardinals battled hard, but couldn’t manage a win, as they dropped three games to Bishop Garrigan on Thursday, Sept. 6.

The Golden Bears picked up the victory with scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-13.

“We did get more block touches and digs in the back row than in previous matches,” said Coach Kelsey Edwards.  “We still need to improve our serving and hitting efficiency.”

Jayden Frank led the team at the net with four kills.  Erica Eenhuis was right behind her with three kills.  Carlee Frayne, Chloe Frank and Morgan Ryerson had two kills apiece.

Macey Spilman led the team in assists with eight.  She also collected six digs.

Eenhuis led the defense with seven digs.  Jamie Hejlik and Maddie Williams had six apiece, while Tori Sloan dug up five hits.

Spilman and Hejlik led the team at the service line, with both serving perfect games of 7/7.  Hejlik collected three points and one ace for her time serving, while Spilman had two points and one ace.   Sloan also had a strong night at the line.  She was 7/8, with four points and one ace.  Chloe Frank was also perfect with 5/5 serving.  She had four points and one ace.  Eenhuis was 6/7 and scored three points for her efforts.

Belmond-Klemme

Tournament

The day had its ups and downs for the Cardinals when they competed in the Belmond-Klemme tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8.

GHV captured wins over Riceville and West Hancock, while they dropped matches to West Fork and Iowa Falls-Alden.

The Cards fought hard against West Hancock in the first game of the day and came away with a 2-1 win.  The first game of the match was a battle, as the two-point win margin was hard to come by.  West Hancock finally got the victory, 30-28.  GHV won the next two matches, 21-14 and 15-11.  Erin Eenhuis led the team in kills with 11.  Megan Eastman recorded four kills, while Morgan Ryerson and Chloe Frank had three apiece.  Macey Spilman set up 20 assists and had three digs.  Spilman led the team on the service line, going 12/14 at the line with two ace serves.  Maddie Williams also had a good night, going 9/12, with two aces.

“There were a few opportunities, where we were serving game point and we had a service error,” said Coach Kelsey Edwards.  “Serving continues to be an area we need to improve upon as a team.”

West Fork handed the Cards an 0-2 loss in the second game of the day, with scores of 21-18 and 21-17.  Eenhuis had a strong game, with eight kills, one block
