It was a week of highs and lows for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team.
GHV 3, Eagle Grove 0
The Cardinals picked up a win on the road, downing Eagle Grove, 3-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The Eagles didn’t go down easily and they made GHV fight for the victories with scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-23.
“In practice we have been working on finishing a set, an area that we are improving upon, but still need to fine tune some more,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.
Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team with almost identical stats. Lau had 13 kills to Van Gerpen’s 12. Lau had eight digs and Van Gerpen had seven. Lau had seven points on serve and two ace serves, while Van Gerpen had six points on serve and one ace.
Carlie Knutson and Jackie Van Oort also had good nights. Knutson contributed three kills,

six digs and had two ace serves. Van Oort led the team at the service line with 12 points on serve and one ace. She also had seven digs and one kill.
Sydney Childress led the team in assists with 18. She also had six points on serve.
Bishop Garrigan Tournament
GHV struggled at the Bishop Garrigan Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Cardinals dropped all three matches.
“The girls had to play some different positions at the tournament and they responded well,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “There are pockets when our game is smooth and our offense looks strong. Our goal needs to be to push throughout the set, not just in spurts.”
GHV faced Clarion-Goldfield in the first match of the day. They won the first set, 21-14, but dropped the next two, 21-19 and 15-10.
Lau led the team with seven kills, followed by Van Gerpen with five and Knutson and Van Oort each had four kills.
Van Oort and Van Gerpen led the defense with eight digs apiece.
Childress handled the setting position and had 16 assists.
For the second match of the day, the Cardinals faced the tough Lake Mills Bulldogs. The Bulldogs won in two, 21-6 and 21-10.
Lau led the team with three kills and five digs. Childress had five assists.
The Cardinals came out strong in the third match of the day against Bishop Garrigan. They captured a close 22-20 victory in the first set. GHV fell apart in the second set and lost, 21-6. It was a battle to the end in the third set, but Bishop Garrigan prevailed with a 15-13 victory.
The Cardinals played the last two matches of the tournament without Van Gerpen, one of their strongest players.
Lau picked up some of the slack, collecting 10 kills. Knutson, Bailee Frayne and Van Oort each had three kills.
Knutson and Childress led the defense with five digs apiece. Van Oort and Payton Bamrick had four digs apiece.
Childress led the team in assists with 12.
