GHV X-C hitting stride
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys cross country team captured a team championship at the Eagle Grove Meet held on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The boys had three runners finish in the top 10 and ended the meet with 48 points. Gilbert was second with 58 points and Clear Lake was third. The girls team finished in ninth place.
Chase Smith and Reece Smith finished in the number one and number two spots to pace all runners. Chase Smith ran the race in 16:12, while Reece Smith finished in 16:27. Also in the top 10 was Logan Dalbeck, finishing seventh with a time of 16:57. Ray Cataldo wasn’t far behind, with an 11th place finish in 17:28. Rounding out the runners was Derek Brown in 27th place, at18:16. Also running varsity was Ezra Marroquin, 18:23; and Austin Siegrist, 18:26.
Maria Gonzalez led the girls team with a 16th place finish in 21:02. Other varsity runners were Morgan Graham, 23:05; Rebekah Larson, 23:30; Hannah Wellik, 24:08; Kaylee Hudspeth, 24:09; Rachel Sokol, 25:57; and Emma Whelan, 26:56.
Recording personal best times at the meet were Reece Smith, Marroquin, Gonzalez, Graham and Wellik.
“I think that we ran very well as a team, and have positioned ourselves to peak at the right time of the season,” said Coach Jeff Short.
The team competes on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Newman Catholic Meet, held on the NIACC campus. The varsity will run at 4:30 p.m.
