Girls soccer team moves mark to 5-1
The Clear Lake girls soccer team improved its record to 5-1 last week with wins over Belmond-Klemme, Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Decorah.
CL 9, B-K 0
Brooklyn Eden had four goals, helping the Lions to wrangle the Belmond-Klemme Broncos, 9-0, on Monday, April 18. Addison Jones scored twice and Emily Benitz, Kaylee McCarl and Emily Theiss had one goal apiece in the shutout.
Ella Nielsen and Jones were credited with assists.
Goalkeeper Rowan O’Keefe had four saves in the win.
CL 6, H-D 0
The Lions posted another shutout against Hampton-Dumont Thursday. The girls held possession most of the game and were able to find the net on six different occasions.
Brooklyn Eden had a hat trick and one assist in the victory. Ella Nielson added a goal, along with two assists. Jordan Mayland had a goal and assist. Addison Jones contributed one goal, as well.
“Again, the defense played solid and, for the most part, kept it out of our goal keep’s hands,” said Coach Greg Jennings.
The junior varsity Lions also played well on Thursday night. “We passed the ball really well and had great spacing,” said Jennings. Zoe Koontz found success putting in a pair of goals, leading the Lions to a 2-0 victory.
CL 2, Decorah 1
The Lions found themselves in a much closer match Friday at Decorah.
Clear Lake came out strong, controlling the ball for most of the first half despite the Vikings sneaking one in early.
“It was a failed assignment on our part, but we were able to shake it off quickly,” explained Coach Jennings.
Junior Kristina Miller tied the game up on a penalty kick.
“From there, it was lots of close balls off the frame, but we couldn’t get anything to sneak past their goal keeper,” said Jennings.
Olivia Fausnaugh led the defense, keeping most of the pressure alway from goal keeper Rowan O’Keefe. The Lions pulled ahead in the 71st minute with yet another goal coming from Miller to put Lions up for good, 2-1.
