The Clear Lake girls split games with North Central Conference foes Hampton-Dumont and Fort Dodge St. Edmond last week, putting the Lions’ record at 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the NCC.

Hampton-Dumont 54, CL 41

When you’re hot, you’re hot and when you’re not, you’re not.

The Lions were definitely on the “not” side when they faced 12th ranked (3A) and league-leading Hampton-Dumont Tuesday, Jan. 19.  Clear Lake shot just 24.2 percent (17/70) in a 54-41 defeat.

“It’s hard to beat a team like Hampton, who has so many offensive weapons, when you shoot the way we did,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “Surprisingly we still had a chance to win that game because of how well we guarded them.  We never gave up and kept battling.  We had some success driving the ball and putting stress on the defense.”

The Lions trailed 22-12 at halftime, but Coach Smith said it was the third quarter that sunk the Lions.

“Their third quarter start put us in a hole that we couldn’t get out of,” he said.  The Lions eventually got rolling, but we unable to cut into the Bulldogs’ lead.  Heading into the final quarter H-D led, 42-28.  The Lions outscored the Bulldogs 13-12 in the final frame, but the Dogs got the 13-point win.

Emily Snelling paced the Lions with 15 points, while Jordyn Barragy added 10.  Chloe Mueller and Erin O’Tool had five points apiece.  Ellie Biebesheimer put in four and Jessica Faber had two points.

Snelling and Biebesheimer were leaders on the board with eight rebounds apiece.  Mueller was next with six. O’Tool had a team-high five steals.

CL 69, St. Eds 41

The Lions bounced back from a poor shooting night with a very solid performance against St. Eds on Friday, Jan. 22.  They treated the home crowd to a 69-41 victory.

“It was a very good shooting night for us.  We had better rhythm and time in our motion offense and got some good looks because of it,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “Emily (Snelling) continues to be our consistent scorer and Jessica (Faber) was able to get it going from the arc and give us good scoring off the bench.”

Snelling led the way with 28 points, five assists and eight steals.  Faber was also in double figures with 14 points to go with her four rebounds.

Chloe Mueller was next with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, followed by Erin O’Tool with seven points and five rebounds.  Gretchen Jones and Jordyn Barragy each had five points.  Kayla Ritter rounded out the offense with two points.

“We need to continue this aggressive play on the offensive end to be our best by tournament time,” added Coach Smith.
