John H. Klatt
John Harold Klatt, 61 of Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, Jan. 20, 2017 at his home.
A visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Immediately following, burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to to Furry Friends Refuge, 1211 Grand Ave., West Des Moines, Iowa 50265.
John was born Jan. 14, 1956, the son of Harold Albert and Elaine Marie (Kluss) Klatt in Mason City, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1974. He then attended North Iowa Area Community College before graduating from Buena Vista University with an Accounting degree.
Following college, John first began his career as a professor at Buena Vista teaching computer classes. Later, he was an auditor for the Office of the Inspector General.
John was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He enjoyed cars, animals, gardening, and experimenting with different grilling and meat-smoking recipes. He also liked doing carpentry work in his free time. He was known as a very giving and selfless man who cherished the time spent with his family through the years.
John is survived by two nephews, William (Stacy) Moritz, of Urbandale, Iowa and James (Angie) Moritz, of West Des Moines, Iowa; a niece, Susan Moritz of Grimes, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Charles Moritz of Urbandale; two cousins, Mary Fistler of Walker, Iowa and Dawn Latham, of Oelwein, Iowa; a family friend, Anne Denney, of Clear Lake; his beloved dog, Indy; and many great-nieces and a great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Nancy Moritz.
