Lion grapplers fall to Humboldt
by Marianne Gasaway
Lion wrestlers ran into a buzz saw Thursday night in Humboldt. The Wildcats won 10 of 11 contested matches and earned points for three forfeits. They won, 72-6.
“We just looked very rusty and out of our element and lost position in a couple of scramble situations,” commented Coach Evan Johnson.
Clear Lake’s Max Currier was the lone Lion to get a win in the North Central Conference dual meet. Currier pinned DJ Muir in 1:23 for six-points.
Clear Lake fared slightly better in extra matches offered.
Marcus Skidmore pinned Beirut Zeman in 3:59 to win at 120-pounds. Zeke Nelson also got a fall at 132 over Zayn Feaster in 3:14. Mitchil Smith pinned Kyle Caquelin in 1:41 at 195-pounds.
Forest City Duals
The Lions bounced back and split two of four matches while competing at the Forest City Duals on Saturday.
Clear Lake topped St. Ansgar and Okoboji-HSM by scores of 57-24 and 52-24 respectively. They were downed by Charles City, 54-25, and Forest City, 41-27.
Clear Lake’s Caden Jones was undefeated on the day. He earned one of his wins at 138 and three competing at 145-pounds. At 138, Jones recorded a Sudden Victory-1 decision, 6-4, over Nate Doden, of Forest City. At 145 he earned major decisions over Aidan Shannon, of Charles City, 13-5, and Caden Larue, of Okoboji, 12-4. His resume for the day also included a fall against Christian Hermanson, of St. Ansgar, in 2:36.
Max Currier and Sam Nelson each had 3-1 records on the day. Currier won with three falls at 126. His only defeat was to Kellen Moore, of Forest City, 3-0. Nelson’s only loss was also delivered by a Forest City grappler. Brock Moore shut him out, 3-0, in their 132-pound match. Two of his victories were by fall and the third was an 11-4 decision over Alec Staudt, of Charles City.
This week the Lions will wrestle at Fort Dodge St. Edmond Thursday night and will compete in a varsity tournament at Osage on Saturday.
“We have not shied away from any competition this year and have had an incredibly difficult schedule up to this point in the season, but we are still seeing a lot of hard work out of the kids and we are continuing to work toward that end of the year peak,” said Coach Johnson.
