Lions advance to State Golf Meet

Heinemann to represent GHV at State

It’s on to State for the Clear Lake boys golf team!

The Lions, who are ranked third in the final Class 2A ranking published by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association, advanced to State as winners of their District played at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike on Friday, May 19.  The Lions were 15 stroke winners over runner-up New Hampton, 306-321.  Both teams will compete at State Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27 at Lakeside Golf Club in Fort Dodge.

Clear Lake’s Thomas Storbeck earned medalist honors with a (38-35) 73.  His brother, Tate, finished fourth overall with a (37-38) 75.  Kyle Calaguas came in with a (37-41) 78 and Alex Snelling rounded out the score with a (38-42) 80.

GHV’s Matthew Heinemann also advanced to State.  After a poor first drive, Heinemann did not miss another shot.  He ended the day carding a (37-38) 75.  His score tied for fourth place in the meet and was the sixth best score in all of the 2A Districts in the state.

“Matthew’s score, under the conditions, was one of the best rounds of golf that a GHV player has shot in many years,” said GHV Coach Ken Krause.

“Anyone on the team could have scored for us and we would have won,” said Coach Eric Perry, pointing to the the scores of Evan Krause (44-38) 82, and Jackson Hamlin (39-45) 84.  “We shot well in rain blowing sideways.  I can’t believe how well we shot.  The boys got on par streaks and separated themselves from the field.”

Perry noted the District at Dike was loaded.  The field included fifth rated New Hampton, sixth rated Dike-New Hartford, playing on their home course, number 10 Aplington-Parkersburg, and number 11 South Hamilton.  Dike-NH finished third with 324, followed by A-P (325), Denver (327), South Hamilton (330), Clarion-Goldfield (341) and North Fayette Valley (343).

The coach likes the way his team is progressing heading into the State Meet.

“Thomas keeps rolling.  He is so mentally tough. And Tate shot his best round of the year.  It was a great time to make that happen.  It was nice to see since he was struggling the last couple of weeks,” said the coach.  “Kyle was under par with only five holes to go, but he ran into a little trouble.  It just shows how quickly the momentum can change.”

Snelling and Hamlin both started poorly, but put a streak of nine holes with pars and finished with good scores.  “It showed their perseverance— the type of team golfers we need,” said Perry.  “Evan played so well, just had trouble down the stretch.  He is playing  better down now when it is most important.  We need him to be a big dark horse, just like last  year.  He can make it happen.”

The Lions (59-9) tee off at 10:30 a.m. Friday and will begin their second round at 8 a.m. Saturday.
