Lions beat Wildcats in a 6-1 victory
For the second time in as many weeks, the Lions took on Humboldt Monday, May 2. The outcome was the same as the first go-round, with Clear Lake posting a win, 6-1.
The Lions wasted no time getting onto the score board. Ryan Faught delivered a great ball up the middle to Jarod Anderson, who finished the attack in the second minute of the contest. In the 10th minute the Lions tallied a double assist goal, with Anderson passing to Justin Sholly, who found Tanner Berger for the second goal of the match.
The Wildcats answered in the 33rd minute off a corner kick which they converted for a goal.
In the 38th minute Sholly made a crossing pass towards the back post. Anderson attacked the goal, rose up, and executed a perfect header goal. The half ended with the Lions hold a 3-1 lead.
Clear Lake got the scoring going again in the 52nd minute when Dylan Schuchard made a throw in to Faught, who crossed the ball to Berger for the fourth goal of match. One minute later, Sholly gathered up a loose ball and attacked goal. Sholly recorded his first varsity goal with a wicked shot to the upper corner of the back post.
The Lions scoring concluded with Anderson making an attack on goal, dribbling through several defenders, then finishing the attack with a shot on goal. The match concluded 6-1.
“We played a very complete game tonight,” said Coach Matt Anderson. “We had a good week at practice and boys performed much better in all aspects of the game. The defenders were spot on with their positioning and ball placement. The forwards and mid-fielders owned possession, passing, and won many of the 50/50 balls. We improved tonight and played at a high level for the entire match.”
Waverly tournament
On Saturday, May 7, the Clear Lake boys traveled to Waverly, to participate in an 18-team tournament.
In the first match of the day, the Lions took on Cal-Dows. In the eighth minute Jarod Anderson found Sam Pedelty, who converted the pass for an early goal. Eight minutes later, Anderson took a corner kick which he bent in for the second goal. The Lions held a 2-0 lead at halftime. Ten minutes into the second half Justin Sholly found Anderson, who converted the assist for the final goal of the contest.
The second match of the tournament had the Lions facing the number 13 ranked team in Class 2A, Decorah.
“Decorah is aggressive, big, and communicate better than any team we’ve played this season,” said Clear Lake Coach Matt Anderson. “We needed to play our best for the entire match and we just did not do that in the first half.”
As a result, the Lions found themselves in a 4-0 hole. The boys were challenged to step up their play in the second half.
“I was extremely pleased with the resolve the boys played with in the second half. We controlled our passing, made better attacks, and most importantly we did not make any costly mistakes in the second half. Deborah topped the Lions, 8-2.
The final match of the night was against Waterloo Columbus.
“This was a rebound match for us and Waterloo, as we both lost prior to this match,” explained Anderson. “My boys were ready to go and responded as any coach would want to see their team respond to adversity.”
In the second minute Tanner Berger got the Lions on the board when he cleaned up an attack started by Ryan Faught. In the 18th minute Faught called his own number when he punched the ball into the back of the net. The Lions took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the 42nd minute Parker Pitzen made an attack on goal, crossing the ball to the back post. Faught rose up, placing the ball into the back of the net with a header goal. A minute later, Jarod Anderson attacked goal and finished with a goal. Tanner Berger completed the scoring for the Lions in the 58th minute when he finished his attack on goal.
Kyle Willms recorded two shut outs in goal for the weekend.
“Willms had some great distributions, which lead to attacks on goal for us,” said Coach Anderson. “Our goal keeper coach, Coach Hall, was able to join our team last week and we are all ready seeing the impact of having
