Lions fall to tough competition
Algona 3, CL 0
Fourteenth ranked Algona (3A) swept the Lions, 3-0, in a North Central Conference match played Tuesday, Sept 29. Game scores were 25-14, 25-13, 25-12.
“We hung in throughout the match, and our defense played extremely well, but silly mistakes came back to bite us in the end,” said Coach Keith Sears. “I was happy to see girls stepping up and taking a positive move forward when we got down on the scoreboard.”
Marne Euken and Emily Snelling each had four kills to lead the Lions. The power plays were set up by assists from Carson Frahm, who had six on the night. Chloe Mueller kept the ball in play with 32 digs.
Jessica Faber led the team at the service line, going 6/7.
Defensively, Kayla Ritter and Snelling each had two blocks.
Forest City 3, CL 0
The competition only got tougher for the Lions on Thursday, as they hosted seventh ranked (3A) Forest City. The Indians were 3-0 winners by scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-13.
We were fortunate to play two excellent teams this week that constantly tested us. We improved on a number of things, but passing was our Achilles heel this game,” said Coach Sears. “It was tough to get a rhythm going with our new rotation.”
On the positive side, Sears said practices since the non-conference Forest City match have been valuable.
“Practice has had a renewed sense intensity and higher level of focus, which has been great to see,” added the coach.
Jessica Faber had a perfect night serving, going seven-for-seven. Chloe Mueller again led the team in digs with 23. Marne Euken topped the Lions in kills with three and blocks, with two. Emily Snelling was credited with three assists.
The Lions’ next home match is Thursday, Oct. 8, against NCC foe Humboldt, rated 11th in 3A. It will also be Parents and Senior Night for the Lions. Everyone is also encouraged to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
