Lions named to INA All-State Baseball teams
The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2016 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, Aug. 2, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A.
The four seniors selected as team captains are: 4A – Spencer Van Scoyoc, Cedar Rapids, Jefferson; 3A – Grant Judkins, Pella; 2A – Javin Drake, Wilton and 1A – Brady Harpenau, St. Mary’s, Remsen.
The Class 3A State Champion Clear Lake team had three players named to the All-State lists. Ethan McHenry was a First Team selection, while Cooper Merrill and Ben Mason were chosen for the Second Team.
McHenry, a senior, was tabbed as a utility player. He batted .366 through 38 games, with five home runs, two triples and nine doubles. McHenry played first, third, outfield and pitched for the Lions this season.
Merrill was named to the Second Team as an infielder. The senior played shortstop and third baseman for the Lions. He batted .377 with one home run, three triples and 15 doubles in 38 games played.
Mason, a senior, was listed as a utility player on the Second Team. Mason was an infielder and pitcher for the Lions. He batted .333 through 37 games this year.
