The Lions earned a split in matches played last week.  Clear Lake fought back to edge CAL-Dows, but then were schooled by a very talented Ames team.

CL 2, CAL-Dows 1

On Monday, April 10, the Clear Lake boys soccer team traveled to Cal-Dows.  The Lions got off to a slow start, giving up a goal in the fourth minute of the contest.  They trailed 1-0 until the 29th minute, when Dylan Schuchard delivered to ball to Mordecai Nsabaah who finished the assist with a goal.

The match continued 1-1 until the 70th minute of the contest.

Sam Pedelty made a right side attack on goal and finished his shot for the game winner.

“The Cal-Dows field is extremely narrow and short so it makes for a very tight operating space when you place 22 players on the field.  We needed to control the ball better at the start of this contest as to not dig our selves a hole,” said Coach Matt Anderson.  “Some teams we play will be good enough to maintain a single goal lead, so giving up

a quick one is extremely dangerous.  I was very pleased with the guys for fighting through the slow start and ultimately earning the victory.”

Ames 10, CL 0

The Lions welcomed Ames to Lions Field Thursday, and welcomed there departure as well.

“Ames is an undefeated 3A school who placed third in 3A last year.  Heading into our match, Ames had out scored there opponents 29-2,” explained Coach Anderson.

Ames added 10 more to their total by the end of the night, handing the Lions their first 10 goal mercy rule loss.

“Ames was extremely organized, skilled, and physical.  They are by far one of the best teams we’ve played in the last six seasons,” said Anderson.  “The best part of this match will be gained from the video and adjustments to our field presence.  We didn’t have the players needed to match up with Ames, but we do not have to play Ames to make a run at the post season.  This loss will help us be a better team when it is important.”
