Lions struggling for a win
Clear Lake battled yet another rated power last week, as the Lions hosted number nine (3A) Humboldt for Parents Night/Senior Night and Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The Lions made the North Central Conference leading Wildcats (24-3, 6-0) work for a 3-0 victory. Game scores were 25-10, 25-18, 25-12.
“Our girls came out fired up for their final home game, but once again mental mistakes and missed serves slowed our momentum. Despite the loss, it was great seeing all of our seniors contribute in a final hard-fought match,” said Coach Keith Sears.
Seniors Marne Euken and Vivian Benjegerdes led the Lions with three and two kills respectively. Emily Snelling was credited with six assists.
Chloe Mueller set up the offense with 30 digs, followed by Snelling with nine and Sarah Beuhler with seven.
Beuhler, another senior, was also perfect at the service line, going 7/7. Snelling put in nine of 11 service attempts with three aces. Mueller was 3/3 and Euken and Jessica Faber each served 6/8. Faber had two aces and Euken had one.
The 5-17 Lions are still looking for their first win in the NCC.

each swept the Lions 2-0.
Against Osage, Marne Euken and Emilie Jandebeur each had two kills. Emily Snelling made five assists. Euken was also 6/6 at the service line. Game scores were 21-12, 21-5.
WSR topped the Lions 21-6, 21-10. Vivian Benjegerdes, Rachel Niemi and Euken each had one kill in the match. Mueller made three digs and Jessica Faber had two. Serving was led by Snelling, who went 4/4. Jenna Wilkinson and Mueller were each 3/3 at the service line.
The Lions had a closer match with St. Ansgar, but the Saints pulled out a 21-15, 21-11 victory. Euken topped the team with four kills, followed by Kayla Ritter and Snelling with two apiece. Snelling led the way in assists with six. Benjegeredes, Jandebeuer and Mueller each had three digs. Jandebeuer and Mueller were each 2/2 serving. Beuhler was 2/3 with the match’s only ace for the Lions.
“We capped off the week playing three great teams that gave us fits throughout the day,” said Coach Sears. “We played sporadically in each match that made it difficult to get a run going in our favor.”
