Local food pantry celebrates three years
This week the Clear Lake/Ventura Food Pantry celebrates its third full year of operation. The concept of a Food Pantry originated in a Local Mission Task Force at the United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N. It was never intended to benefit only Methodists, but was envisioned to benefit any Clear Lake and Ventura residents who need and qualify for food assistance from the state of Iowa or Cerro Gordo County. The local pantry is affiliated with the Food Bank of Iowa and operates like Harvest Food Bank in Mason City.
“This program never could have succeeded or survived without the financial and food donations from our local churches, organizations, and many, many individuals, who volunteer volumes of merchandise and hours of service,” explained Craig Rule, a member of the local task force. “Although we established our pantry at CLUMC, we are expanding our Task Force Leadership with other benevolent and concerned citizens.”
The Pantry’s clientele has expanded annually from 17 households with 31 individuals during April 2015. In April 2016, the number grew

to 46 households of 68 individuals, then 137 individuals in 70 homes in April 2017. There are currently 96 households and 238 members served in April 2018.
“We know there are many more family units and citizens who are in need of and could use assistance from our Food Pantry, locally,” added Rule.
The Pantry is open every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturdays at 9-11 a.m., and alternate first and third Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.
At the same location an evening meal is served on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:30 until 6:15. The Mason City Community Kitchen prepares the food and supplies on Mondays and Fridays, while a locally prepared meal is offered on Wednesdays. All are welcome to participate in the evening socializing over nutritional meals. Once again transportation, preparation, and services are performed by community volunteers.
“As the needs in our towns continue to rise, we hope to continue offering food, friendship, and fellowship,” said Rule.
