The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team continues to have a problem closing a set. The Cardinals came close to beating North Union on Tuesday, Oct. 6, but just couldn’t quite capture the win. North Union won in three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 26-24.
“Our goal is to be the first team to five, 10, 15, and 25 points,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “On the third set we achieved our first four goals, but we still need to a find a way to close a set.”
Hannah Lau had a fantastic game for the Cards, collecting 14 kills, 11 digs and one blocked shot. She also scored five points on serve.
Also collecting kills for the team was Carlie Knutson with seven, Jacki Van Oort had two and Bretta Carolus and Katie Rasmuson had one kill apiece.
Payton Bamrick was strong on defense, collecting seven digs. Sydney Childress and Taryn Carolus had six digs apiece.
The team had five players serve at 100 percent, Knutson, Lau, Van Oort, Childress and Taryn Carolus. Van Oort and Taryn Carolus each had six points on serve, while Miranda Jackson had four.
“One positive was how we made adjustments throughout the night and competed at the end of set three. The girls remained aggressive and that confidence was an improvement to our game,” said Steffens.
GHV will host a tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17. The tournament begins at 9 a.m.
