It was a productive week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys soccer team, picking up two wins and dropping one match.

IF-A 2, GHV 1

The week started with a match against Iowa Falls-Alden on Monday, April 11.  Cold and windy weather didn’t help the Cardinals, as they fell, 2-0, to the Cadets.

“Iowa Falls is a very good team,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “We did miss a couple of open shots, but I thought we played really well.  When you play a good team like Iowa Falls you can’t make any mistakes and you have to take every advantage that you are given.”

Cardinal mistakes led to the Cadet’s two goals.

GHV 5, CAL 1

With four matches in five days, Coach Williams’ goal for the CAL game was to score some quick goals and then start playing the JV players to give the varsity boys a rest.  The plan played out perfectly for the Cards, as they picked up a goal early that set the tone for the rest of the game.  GHV cruised to an easy 5-1 victory.

Connor Burke scored the first goal in the first minute of the match, followed by another goal later in the first half.  Turner Albertson and Ryley Kozisek also scored a goal apiece in the first half.

The Cardinals played the starters the first five minutes of the second half and then substituted with the JV squad.

“I was extremely proud of the way they played,” said Coach Williams.  “It was really fun watching the JV play.  They give a hard effort every time they are on the field and never give up.  It also gave them some great experience at the varsity level.”

Jace Pringnitz scored GHV’s final goal of the game.

GHV 6, Denver 4

Friday night’s match against Denver was a hard fought battle for the Cardinals, but they came out victorious with a 6-4 win.

“All night bodies were flying around, as the game was very physical,” said Coach Williams.  “I was really proud of our young men as they continued to play their game.”

GHV started quickly, with three shots on goal, but Denver’s goalie was

ready for the pressure and stopped the Cards.  Denver countered that with two goals in the first 20 minutes of play.  GHV followed that with goals of their own by Ryan Meyers and Dalton Basinger, 2-2.  The Cards took more shots, but all fell short of the net.

Patrick Terhark opened the second half with a goal.  Denver answered that with two goals of their own, 4-3.  Good passes and a lot of hustle helped the Cardinals collect three more goals in the final 20 minutes to claim the 6-4 victory.

The story of the night was Brady Hess in the goalie position.  Hess, who only has three practices under his belt at the position, is the team’s fourth choice.  Hess came through for the team and got the victory.
