(Above) Dreams for peace in 1991 - Second graders at Lincoln School displayed an American flag made with their handprints since the fall. In conjunction with Martin Luther King Day, the students wrote their dreams for peace on paper resembling candles. The group decided to hang their candles with the flag. The display will hang in the school until troops come home.

Local people watched closely on Wednesday, Jan. 16, as the news came that war erupted in the Persian Gulf. Clear Lake Mayor Lois Kotz and Mason City Mayor Bill Schickel have asked citizens to display the American flag on Friday in a show of support for service men and women in the Persian Gulf.
The Clear Lake City Council has voted to hire a consulting firm to develop a comprehensive plan to bring city services to the newly annexed areas of the city.
For the first time in three years, the annual North Iowa winter sports and activities festival, Winterfest ’91, will be held with ample snow cover for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling. Winterfest ’91 will take place at McIntosh Woods State Park.
Current members of the Semper Fidelis Chapter of the National Honor Society at Clear Lake are Andrew Hansen, Christi Bauer, Shannon Quigley, Heather Datema, Kirsten Hickman, Karla Lewerke, Pam Wilbert, Debra Hanson, Kirk Sorbo, Brad Whalen, Adam Callanan, Shannon Berge, Jason Skinner, and Mark Meelhause.
Mike Stensrud, a former Iowa State football player who went on to play professional football, read for students at Lincoln and Sunset Schools last week.
Clear Lake wrestlers dominated the North Central/Northwood-Kensett High School Wrestling Tournament with six champions. Sean Harlan, Chad Whitecotton, Brandon Frampton, Shawn Zimmerman, Mike Andrews and Jason Salge all claimed championship honors.
The Clear Lake girls fell, 56-50 to Forest City. Kathy Walls led the team with 20-points. Mindy Day added 16-points.
The Ventura girls picked up two close victories. The Lady Vikes topped C-W/L, 77-71, and North Central, 48-23. Jenni Fey led the Lady Vikes against C-W/L with 40-points. Megan Coe scored a career high 37-points against North Central.

The Clear Lake school system has $21,632.22 extra money to spend and ways are now being considered on how to spend it. The money was allocated by the State Department of Public Instruction from funds provided by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.
A snow mobile rally will be held in Clear Lake Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22-23.
The Clear Lake basketball team nipped Clarion, 61-55. The win lifted the league leading Lions to 5-1 in the N.C.C. Conference and 7-1 overall.
Four accidents occurred last week in Clear Lake due to icy streets.
Playing at the Lake Theater is “Girl Happy,” starring Elvis Presley and Shelley Fabares.

Joe Jensen, appointed by the Clear Lake City Council as assistant city clerk, assumed his duties Tuesday, Jan. 3, he will work at present in the water department.
Floor joists smoldering from the heat of a fire in a fireplace above them filled the Forde Lee home at 1216 Second Ave. with smoke early Monday evening.
Myrna Reynolds received the WEGIVWAY prize at Verna’s Fashion Shop.
John Rutan left Saturday for Paulina, where he has been coach for several years.
Mrs. William Bickford, Jr. was installed worthy matron of Park Chapter, No. 35, Order of Eastern Star at the Masonic Temple.

The school board at Thornton has purchased bob sleds for the conveyance of the country children to and from school. They will be fitted up with long boxes covered with canvas, and made as comfortable as possible.
Seventeen railroads out of 100 in Chicago will not hire a man who smokes cigarettes. The sickening odor of cigarettes is enough to condemn them to joblessness.
Potatoes are 75¢ a bushel at Stenby’s.
