Remember When 1-23-2019

January 1994

Businesses along Clear Lake’s Main Avenue agreed to “bite the bullet” this summer and go along with the city’s proposed $211,000 reconstruction of the 300 block of Main Ave.  The project includes total reconstruction of the Main Ave. block with water main and storm and sewer replacement, new lights, and brick sidewalk pavers.

Author and radio show host Garrison Keillor has agreed to lend his voice to a documentary about Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom for national airing in the spring of 1995.  Keillor first became acquainted with the Surf Ballroom when he broadcast his radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion,” from the Surf in February 1992.  At that time, Keillor offered to do what he could to help the legendary ballroom.

Rain in past years has not dampened the spirits of area air show enthusiasts.  Kirk Kraft, of Clear Lake, said preliminary plans are underway to stage Air Show ’94 at the Mason City Municipal Airport Father’s Day weekend.  Kraft, co-chairman of the event with Doug Rozendaal, said hopes are high for a tradition-filled weekend for families to enjoy.

Four new Clear Lake High school students have been inducted into the Semper Fidelis Chapter of the National Honor Society: Rachel Willis, Ben Norris, Shiona Stewart and Laura Enabnit.

CLHS Model UN has been chosen to represent the state at the National Model United Nations Conference to be held at the Palmer House Hilton an the University of Chicago.  This year Clear Lake is representing the national Kuwait at the State level, but the delegations biggest honor is being chosen as one of the schools in Iowa to represent the state at the national level.  Clear Lake’s delegation has been given the task of role-playing the small Asian nation of Bhutan at the National Conference.  CLHS delegates include: Julie McLaugling, Kelley Foehrkolb, Jane Cherry, LaBeth Sheldon, Ben Norris, and Robin Calhoun.

Kum and Go stores have announced a Blimp Submarine Sandwich restaurant will be opening in Clear Lake at 2005 Highway 18 East on Jan. 31.  This is the current location of the Kum and Go Convenience store.

Sharing Club News for the week were: Lincoln Peppy Pals 4-H Club, Stepping Forward, Clear Lake Storytelling Group, Rural Lakettes Club, T.T.T. Chapter E.H, and T.T.T. Chapter AQ.

The Ventura girls basketball team started a busy stretch of four games in five days with two tense struggles.  The Lady Vikes had to rally past Woden-Crystal Lake, 51-44, and hold off CAL, 39-37.  After two tight games, Ventura was looking for some breathing room.  They found it in a 66-36 thrashing of Dows in the final conference game for both teams.  Sara Hinrichs, the state leader in field goal percentage at .697, led Ventura with 16 points against CAL.  Heather Nordman added 10 points, as she, Hinrichs and Abby Ringus grabbed five rebounds apiece.

The Clear Lake girls didn’t fair very well against Webster City, as the Lynx powered inside for a 46-23 victory.  Annalisa Hopper came off the bench to hit two three-pointers in the second quarter, but had no support.  Hopper ended the game with nine points.  Jodi Grabinski had four points and Jen Toyne and Heather Steals had three points apiece.

There was a first time champion at the 1994 North Central Conference wrestling meet, and it wasn’t Clear Lake, with their 9-0 mark in duals and three tournament titles.  Hampton-Dumont placed nine wrestlers in the top four to outlast ninth-ranked Humboldt and the sixth-ranked Lions for their first title in 27 year history of the meet.  The Lions broke a two year drought of not crowning a champion with David Doebel’s victory at 152 pounds.  The Lions had two other finalists in Craig Billings and Ryan Boeshart.

January 1969

Six churches in Clear Lake have joined together to sponsor a series of worship services observing the “Week Prayer for Christian Unity.”  Churches participating include: Zion Lutheran, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church.

There were 107 traffic accidents reported by Nelson Larsen, Chief of Police in Clear Lake, in 1968.  These resulted in 18 personal injuries and car damage amounting to $47,296.  No traffic fatalities were reported in the last year.  There were also 13 break-ins, 287 felony and misdemeanors, 23 violations of the dog lawns and 68 acts of vandalism.

75 Years Ago

January 1944

Fine winter weather thus far.  No snow yet this winter.  Most of the time the temperature has ranged from 5 to 45 above.

Gerald Brooks left Camp Dodge and has been assigned to a supply unit of a tank destroyer unit at North Hook, Texas.

Everett Hollatz was in the hospital one day last week after being overcome with gas in his house.  He was able to get outside where he was found unconscious.

Mrs. D.E. Kenyon fell Thursday evening and featured her right limb below the knee.  It was placed in a cast which she must wear for six weeks.

Mrs. John Kopecky, retiring Noble Grand, entertained all 1943 officers of Tina Rebekah Lodge at her home Saturday evening and presented them with presents.

There are 537 Clear Lakers now in the armed services.

100 Years Ago

January 1919

One of the largest crowds ever assembled at the high school gymnasium was present last Friday evening to witness the basketball game between Garner and Clear Lake.  The game ended in a score of 34-25 in favor of Garner.  The sale of tickets was $38.40.

Elmer Spangler, who had been in France one month, returned to Clear Lake Sunday.  He greatly enjoyed his airplane experience.  Sometimes they were 6,000 feet above the earth.  He met Gerald Pushee in France and was delighted to see someone he knew.

Choate and Chizek are over at Dodge’s Point this week cutting and putting up ice for F.D. Way, the caretaker, and for Dodge’s Point and the Country Club.  The ice is about 12” thick.

McGowan and Sheridan will have in this week a shipment of the Old Trusty incubators.
