The City of Clear Lake celebrated a piece of good economic news with leaders of Cole Sewell Corporation as details of the business’s major expansion were released. Cole Sewell located on former Highway 106, is undertaking a 34,500 square feet expansion to the existing solid core storm door plant. The expansion will result in 40 new jobs over a two-year period.
The Ventura Library saga continues. The Ventura City Council voted to set a public hearing for Nov. 4. At that time three options defined by the Council will be presented and with luck one will be chosen that voters can approve or reject in a referendum vote tentatively scheduled for Dec. 17.
Clear Lake police and dispatchers, members of Teamsters Local Union No. 828, are asking the city for a 10 percent across the board wage increase, in addition to increases in longevity pay, vacations and benefits.
Four men are seeking three positions on the Ventura City Council. Current Councilmembers Don Morrison and Dr. Norman Held are seeking re-election, while Darwin Avery and Frank Ray are hoping to gain seats on the Council.
A highlight of the Chamber of Commerce’s fall fling was the burning of the Chamber’s mortgage.
The cast has been announced for the upcoming Clear Lake High School production of “Annie.” Erin Clancy will play Annie. Kara Foehkolb will play Miss Hannigan and Jack McLaughlin will play Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks.
A public opening and dedication of the Guardian Angel Roadside Chapel will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20. The chapel is located along Interstate 35.
Major Mark J. Christian, United States Army, has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for meritorious service while assigned on temporary duty with the Multinational Force and Observers, Sinai, Arab Republic of Egypt from October 1990 to April 1991. Major Christian served as the Force Automation Officer during that time.
Dr. Jeff Anderson and his wife, Leslie, have announced the opening of the Clear Lake Chiropractic Clinic at 12 N. 8th St., in the T.K. Plaza. Dr. Anderson and his wife are natives of Northwood and Grafton. They will make their home in Clear Lake.
The Clear Lake Lions flexed their muscles Friday night, showing Clarion in convincing style why they are rated number four by the Associated Press in Class 3A. The 50-point high school scoring rule went into effect midway through the third quarter, ending the game at 50-0. Joe Sokol led the rushing game with 75-yards.
After a frustrating first half, the Ventura Vikings managed to come away with an 8-6 victory over conference rival Alden on Friday night. Ventura’s only score on the night came in the second period. Ventura’s Curt Badker blocked a first quarter field goal attempt to give the Vikings momentum to score. Mark Wireman caught a 30-yard Matt Dillavou pass and ran another 27-yards for the Viking TD. Matt Halverson caught another Dillavou pass in the end zone to add two more points.
The ever improving Clear Lake volleyball team challenged number 16 rated Algona in four games before falling, 3-15, 15-12, 2-15, 8-15. Laura Hagen had five kills, while Joy Freshman had there. Danny Copas served 19/19 with two aces.
Ventura’s Troy Roenfanz continues to turn in top times as a runner for the Ventura cross country team. Roenfanz placed ninth at the Algona meet with a time of 17:16.
Clear Lake’s Aaron Marken and Ventura’s Scott Hinrichs are both members of the Simpson College football squad.
50 Years Ago • October 1966
Clear Lake opened their doors to those in need from Belmond during the weekend, after that neighboring town 2,506 suffered one of the most catastrophic storms of the century in Iowa. A tornado ravaged the town Friday afternoon destroying 80 percent of its business district. Six persons were killed and hundreds injured.
A crowd of 246 merchants and teachers and spouses attended the 10th annual Teacher-Merchant banquet at the Surf. A smorgasbord was catered buy Witke’s and dancing and cards followed.
Clear Lake, fighting both a strong defensive team and inclement weather, dropped the fourth game of the season at Clarion, 6-0. Larry Jacobson and Kirk Nelson continue to be stalwarts in the Lions defense. Jacobsen made 18 tackles and Nelson had 11 stops.

75 Years Ago • October 1941
A strong wind, accompanied by rain and lightning hit Clear Lake about midnight Saturday damaging some barns on area farms. Several porches were blown from houses, trees down, and building moved from their foundations.
Five more Clear Lake youths were drafted into the army. They are Roger Earl Grell, Julius Frederickson, Omar Lenning, Paul Hamilton Patton and Donald Nissen.
There are 10 Clear Lakes listed in the United States with Clear Lake, Iowa being the largest.
The corner store has been leased to Harold Jorgenrud and Carl Engdahl for the operation of a Ben Franklin Store. The west front has been leased to Oma Button for the operation of a Federated Store. The Fourth Street one has yet to be leased.
100 Years Ago • October 1916
There is no reason why such a large number of fires should be occasioned by careless handling of matches, lamps, oil, gasoline, and by out of control bonfires and the burning of brush and leaves. Also rags and clothing left near stove pipes is also a hazard. Be more careful, people.
The curfew bell is now being rung at 9:30 each evening, notifying the residents of the city it is time for children 16 years of age and under to be off the streets. The resolution passed by the council should be carried out.
Carp is 5¢ a pound at Young’s Yellow Front.

Max Olsen, Mrs. George Etzel and Beatrice Phelps each gave a pleasing solo at the sacred concert at the Congregational Church. Miss Tennie Olson delighted the audience with a reading and Dr. Litscher, although just recently coming to Clear Lake, has a host of friends who enjoy his songs at the piano. Miss Keel directed the vested choir.
