Benjamin Furleigh, a native of Clear Lake, has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for the new 19th District seat in the Iowa House of Representatives.  Furleigh, 27, has lived in North Iowa for 25 years and is a 1983 graduate of Clear Lake High School. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1988 with a degree in agricultural business, he went to work for Stine Seed Company as a management trainee and then as a marketing specialist.  Currently Furleigh is a regional sales representative for the firm.

The Lake Level dropped slightly last week.  On Monday, Oct. 21, the level of Clear Lake was measured at -0.4

Troy Roenfanz and Tracy Meier will take the stage as Curly and Laurey in the popular musical “Oklahoma” Nov. 9-10, at Ventura.  The directors for the school musical are Bonnie Stewart, vocal; Sara Schaefer, drama; and Sue Krumrei, art department.

A Clear Lake couple has received recognition for their local contributions to the Gulf war.  George and Edna Klaassen recently received a plaque from the Mason City based 1133rd National Guard Army unit.  Last fall the Klaassens wrote more than 100 Christmas cards and encouraged the public to send cards to the many soldiers serving in Dessert Storm/Shield.  They received responses from some 80 service men and women.

Clear Lake native Anne Statesman, director of a shelter for the homeless in Pueblo, Colo., has been named as the 516th “Daily Point of Light” for the nation, as designated by President George Bush.

Mark Fisher, of Clear Lake, has been named the winner of the 1991 Customer Applicator Crop Production Chemical Salesmanship Award, presented by his employer, DowElanco.  Fisher was nominated by his customers.  Along with the ward, his picture will appear on the cover of a national trade magazine with an accompanying story.

“The Clear Lake T-Shirt Shoppe” and “Balloons Galore and More” announce the opening of both stores at 308 Main Ave., in Clear Lake.

The Clear Lake Lions got a lock on post-season with a 35-7 victory over Iowa Falls Friday night.  Regardless of the outcome of this week’s game against Humboldt, Clear Lake is guaranteed a share of the conference title and a shot in the state playoffs.  Dan Hansen led the team in rushing, racking up 94-yards on 10 carries.  Clear Lake was also helped by four interceptions.  Joe Sokol picked of two passes, while Jeff Lester and Mark Moeller each had one interception.

After scoring in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Ventura football team came up short in its conversion effort, giving Sheffield-Chapin/Meservey-Thornton an 8-6 North Star Conference win Friday night. Quarterback Matt Dillavou completed nine of 21 passes for 115-yards. Dillavou is having a very good year,  He has 1,017-yards passing in seven games and he needs 123-yards to tie the single-season passing record at Ventura set in 1964 by Mike Monson.  Matt Halverson and Dillavou are both among the state leaders for passing and receiving.

October 1966

The Clear Lake City Council met in special session with Frederick Beck, an attorney from Mason City, who represented the North Iowa Terminal Railroad Co. in regard to the abandonment of the tracks on East Main Ave.  The company had agreed to remove the tracks.

Firemen from Clear Lake, Ventura, Mason City and Fertile fought a corn field fire on the Beryl Bobst farm.  Over 100 men volunteered to help get the fire under control.  Several neighbors came with plows and discs to establish a ditch to confine the fire, while others took off their jackets and beat the flames.

A football game between Ventura and Sheffield-Chapin ended in a tie, 12-12.  Herb Garlock, Dick Grady, Tom Jacobson and Dave Oehlert all had a good game for the Vikings.

October 1941

A large crowd is expected to attend the husking contest at Frank Daker’s.  The winner will represent Cerro Gordo County at Mallard.

David Gerdes and Franklin Pitkin left for Ft. Des Moines to be inducted into the army.  Roger Grell was given a leave of six weeks before reporting for the army as he was needed in Sam Kennedy’s fields during harvest.

L.E. Ashland, Roscoe Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Art Ashland returned Tuesday from Canada where they went deer hunting.  They each brought home a deer, fastening them to their cars.

Tom Miller, son of Roscoe Miller, was bitten by a dog as he played in his sandpile at his home.  Mrs. Miller looked out as he screamed, causing the dog to run away.

100 Years Ago

October 1916

Ray Sandry sold a load of baby beef steers for which he received $10 per hundred.  They brought close to $90 a head and were only 18 months old.

Fred Gates and Bert Lowrey were on their way to Ventura when they accidentally drove off the grade near the Parker Orchard.  They met an auto at the bridge driving at a high rate of speed and Bert drove too close to the edge of the bank.  The car tipped over and pinned Bert under, but he was rescued by Fred.

On account of the high price of flour, the Department of Agriculture is advising housewives to use more potatoes in making bread.  In their experiments, the department baked excellent bread with three pounds of potatoes and two and one half of flour.

Ned O’Neill, the real estate man, met what might have been a fatal accident.  He was up near Ventura when a careless hunter shot at some wild game near where Mr. O’Neill was standing and some shot struck him in the legs and hand.

William Carr will have a public auction Oct. 25.  He has 105 head of livestock, machinery, etc.
