October 1996

As expected, the Clear Lake School Board accepted petitions from voters asking that a bond issue not to exceed $6.9 million be placed on the ballot Dec. 3.  Voters will be deciding if the 82-year-old Central School should be replaced with a new school to house grades three to five.

Ventura voters will need to go back to the polls Dec. 3 if an addition to their elementary school is to be constructed.  The School Board had originally intended to pay for a media center expansion project with funds from its Schoolhouse Levy, however, bids which exceeded estimates for the project by some $200,000 now make it impossible to fund the project on the four-years left on the levy.  Monday night the board decided to ask voters for a renewal of the levy for 10 years which will then make the project possible.

Ali Secory and Josh Baker reigned over Friday night’s Homecoming football game in Clear Lake as the school’s Homecoming queen and king.

An Iowa City woman has been ordered to pay back $15,000 to victims in the Clear Lake area whom were bilked in a securities scam.  She was accused of taking thousands of dollars from residents who thought they were investing in a company that made carbon monoxide detectors.

A retirement party for Donna Dull, a longtime teacher in the Clear Lake Schools, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, in the community room at the Municipal Building.  Dull was a kindergarten teacher in the schools for 39 years.

Ken and Paula Hanus, Clear Lake, announce the birth of their son, Austin Joseph Chenchar Hanus.  He was born Oct. 1, 1996.

Club’s sharing news on the Social page were: Christian Singles, La Leche League, Clear Lake Friendly Garden Club, TTT Chapter EH, Ventura Flower Club, Rural Lakettes Club, Horsemen of Iowa and Sorosis Club.

The Clear Lake Lions picked up a 35-0 Homecoming victory again Hampton-Dumont Friday night.  Ted Secory rushed for 55-yards on the night and scored one TD.  He ranks fourth in scoring with three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to his credit.  The Lions defense currently leads the district.  To date, the Lions have held their opponents to an average of 128-yards per game.  That’s 35-yards less per game than second place Estherville with an average of 163.

A very good Alden team was too much for the Ventura volleyball team Monday night.  Danielle Hughes was five of six from the service line with a pair of aces, while Margo Kressin was a perfect six of six in attacks with two kills.

Dan Hunter, noted singer, songwriter and humorist will be bringing “Picture Postcard Musicale” to the Surf Ballroom on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m.  The show is a concert of song, pictures and story based on picture postcards from the 1900s.

In concert at the Surf Ballroom on Sept. 13 is Sammy Kershaw.

50 Years Ago

September 1971

Ten senior girls were selected by the varsity football squad as candidates for the 1971 Homecoming.  They are Nancy Lambert, Jeannine Aastrup, Sue Granger, Ann Nelson, Lu Ann Hanson, Connie McDonald, Barb Travaille, Pat Lewis, Cindy Walls and Sue Ritter.  Granger, Aastrup and Ritter were voted on by the student body as the three finalists for Homecoming Queen.  

Sherry Ollenburg, Mary Buckley or Elaine Suby will be crowned Homecoming queen during halftime of the Ventura vs. Sheffield-Chapin football game Friday night.

Two Clear Lake businesses are having anniversaries.  Marlys Van Horn will observe her second year in the Clear Lake Variety Store, 309 Main Ave.  Peterson Farm Store, 200 10th Ave. N., is celebrating 21 years in business.

The Iowa Falls Cadets blanked the Lions on the football field Friday night, 45-0.

75 Years Ago

September 1946

The Lions defeated Garner 7-0.  Rae Bieber is out for the season with a broken shoulder.  The stellar half-back will be lost to the team.

It is an agreed upon fact among residents of Clear Lake that something should be done about the water supply which has reached the point where the taste and odor now being piped to homes is offensive.  We suggest that a public forum be held with competent and experienced men present to decide whether or not it would be advisable to drill wells sufficient to take care of the community’s needs.

Bob Hope and Joan Caulefield are playing in “Monsieur Beaucaire” at the Lake.

For sale: cheap, a 60 ft. windmill in good condition.  Talk to Ole Fatland.

Angus McKenchie, Anchorage, Alaska, is visiting Max Clausen this week.  He is a former army buddy from Ft. Richardson.

100 Years Ago

September 1921

Only one mile of paving between Garner and Ventura remains to be completed.  About four more weeks will do the job.

A franchise has been granted the C.L. Light & Power to operate an electric transmission line on the road running west from Clear Lake to the east edge of Ventura.  Ventura is desirous of securing electric lights, hence, they will not long remain without this modern convenience.

A chicken pie supper with all the trimmings will be held Wednesday night at the Methodist Church.  Cost is 50¢.

Sondrol’s has men’s ribbed fleeced long underwear for only $1.  Think how good they will feel on cold winter days.

Specials for the week at C.C. Lock’s are round steak, lb., 20¢; sirloin steak, lb., 20¢; hamburger, 2 lbs., 25¢.

John Furse and his wife, who have been over at Oakwood running a stand during the summer season, have returned to their Clear Lake residence.
