November 1993

The late Norm Theiss, head football coach at Clear Lake High School from 1968-1975, will be inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame this weekend.  Norm’s son, Dave Theiss, will accept the award in a ceremony at halftime of the Class 4A championship game on Friday, Nov. 19.  Theiss posted a record of 43-13-2 with the Lions from 1968-1974.  Theiss’ career came to a sad end, as he died of a heart attack in late August 1975 at the age of 50.

A gift of two cellular telephones to be used on Clear Lake school buses was announced Friday by the Clear Lake Independent Telephone Company in a move designed to enhance communication on long trips and increase safety factors in times of bus difficulty.  The phones, valued at approximately $500 will be carried on out-of-town activity trips and on buses to away games.

Clear Lake firefighters were called to Furleigh Fruit and Vegetable Farm, 811 N. 56th St., Clear Lake, at 11:22 a.m. to extinguish a blaze.  According to Fire Chief John Simpson, early indications were that exhaust fumes from the skid loader ignited the crates and started the blaze.  Damage was estimated at approximately $1,000.

Gene Madson was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award by Rotarian Rev. Charles Williams at a luncheon in Madson’s honor.

Veterans Jim Brood and Jim Ransom raised the flag to open Veteran’s Day services outside E.B. Stillman Auditorium Thursday.  Clear Lake High School students and the public listened as students Ryan Taylor and Lesley Simmering presented speeches and Mrs. Carrie Heitland presented a flag to the president of the high school student body, Katie Crabb.  Heitland told the audience this would be her last year taking part in the services.

Liz and Alan Heady have announced Clear Lake’s new fitness club, Health Quest, will open on Monday, Nov. 22.  Health Quest s located in the Cornerstone Building, next to Team Quest, at the corner of Interstate 35 and 4th Ave. S.

Ken and Cyndi Chizek proudly announce the birth of their first child, Kaitlyn Louise.  She was born on Nov. 6, 1993.

The Ventura volleyball team capped of their record-setting 23-7-1 season with five selection to the North Star All-Conference team.  Leading the way for the regular season co-champions and tournament title winners were First Team selections Sarah Hinrichs and Angie Bieber, both juniors.  Senior Heather Nordman earned Second Team honors.  Senior Summer Quinn and junior Amanda Avery received Honorable Mention recognition.

Erin Grell and Brook Fischer have received All-North Central Conference volleyball honors.  Grell, a junior, was a First Team All-NCC selection.  Fischer, also a junior, was named Honorable Mention.

November 1968

Clear Lake had a near record turnout at the polls Tuesday as Republicans dominated local and county voting.  A total of 2,899 voted in the presidential race.  Richard M. Nixon defeated Hubert H. Humphrey in the presidential election.  Democratic Gov. Harold Hughes defeated David Stanley for U.S. Senator and Republican Robert Ray won the governor’s office.

A proposed amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance would remove the last legal obstacle - as far as the City Council is concerned - in the planned construction of a luxury apartment building on N. Lakeview Dr.  The plan is to build a three-story 18-unit apartment building on a tract formerly occupied by the Lakeshore Hotel.

The Ventura Vikings closed out their 1968 football season by losing to CAL, 7-6.  The Vikings finished with a season’s mark of 6-2 and a North Star Conference record of 5-2.  The Viking defense was led by seniors Layne Grey and Tom Roenfanz.  Juniors Bill Lundgren and Mike Kadolph also had their share of tackles.  Leading rushers were Dick Grady, with 65-yards, Bruce Clear with 26, and Bruce Anderson with 30.

75 Years Ago

November 1943

Sid Halford’s Cafe opened Saturday with free coffee and donuts.  It was crowded all afternoon.  The fixtures are all new and modern.  The booths are made of walnut. The lunch counter along the west side is also walnut.

The Woman’s Club is planning a minstrel show, which should prove to be hilarious.

Everett Hollatz, who is employed at the Clarence Bast home, suffered a painful injury last week when his hand was caught in the elevator hoist as they were loading corn.

Joe Caffrey has purchased the old Charles Grimm farm and will take possession March 1.

94 Years Ago

November 1924

The Park Theatre has built a balcony thus enhancing the capacity of the theatre to a great extent.

Earl Kugler, who has been in business here many years, has sold his business to P.L. Pearsall, an experienced, wide-awake, young man.

Clare Davis broke his arm last week while cranking his auto.

Congregational Ladies Aid will hold their annual supper Friday.  On the menu is casserole chicken, mashed potatoes, brown gravy, rutabagas, cabbage salad, cranberry jelly, graham rolls, white bread, apple pie, cheese and coffee, all for 50¢.

Clear Lake Electric Light and Power Co. state there is a big gas leak somewhere.  Anyone knowing where it is is asked to please call the office at once.
