December 1993

A Lincoln, Neb. man has been named as the new executive director of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Clear Lake Business and Industrial Development Corporation.  David Collins, 36, will assume the combined position Jan. 3, 1994.

A new taxi service plans to offer Clear Lake residents evening transportation.

The Clear Lake City Council voted to take action against a property owner owing $1,789 in overdue water bills.  Plumbing leaks at the vacated residence caused the large bill.

Members of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce First Mates welcomed Christensen Jewelry located on Main Ave., as a member of the business community.  Russ Gibson opened the store in October.

The Evangelical Free Church of Clear Lake will again present a Live Nativity on Dec. 19, from 5-8 p.m.  The nativity will be stationed outside of the church youth center, located at 417 1st Ave. S.  The nativity can be viewed from a car, or cars may be parked in the Fareway parking lot across the street.  Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be available.

George J. And Betty Lunn will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary  on Dec. 19.

After collapsing in the fourth quarter against 13th-ranked Northeast Hamilton, the Ventura girls basketball team needed a confidence booster.  They got it with a 44-42 win over Mason City Newman Catholic Saturday night.  Heather Nordman took advantage of the Lady Vikings ability to find her underneath the basket, as she collected 19-points on 8/10 shooting. She also pulled down eight rebounds.

Just when it seems the Clear Lake boys basketball team will turn a corner and win a game, they run right into another wall.  The Lions saw an excellent chance to open the North Central Conference schedule with a win slip away as their offense fell silent at critical times in their 67-59 loss to Clarion-Goldfield.  Jason Floy had 15 points for the Lions and Mark Ebeling added 10.

The Clear Lake wrestling team finished second at the Mason City Mohawk Invitational.  Coach Gary Weber was very pleased with his team’s efforts.  Clear Lake crowned four champions at the meet.  Sean Harlan, Craig Billings, Ryan Boeshart and David Doebel posted 3-0 marks to claim individual titles.

50 Years Ago

December 1968

The Golden Lion Drive-in, formerly Folkmann’s Dairy Delite, opened on Highway 18.  Stanley Viet, who has been operating the dairy establishment, has purchased the property from A.E. Folkmann and has expanded into food business including pizza, fried chicken, and all kinds of sandwiches, in addition to his regular line of sundaes, sodas and malts.

Ken Grabinski, all stater from Clear Lake, scored 12 points for the freshman as the University of Iowa varsity thrashed the Hawkeye yearlings in a recent game, 121-65.

Ventura is contributing toward Simpson College’s football success.  The two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred (Butch) Monson were star performers for the 1968 Redmen.  Al, a 24-year old sophomore who served two years in the service (one in Vietnam), was a First-Team end on the All-Iowa Conference team.  Brother, Mike, 22, was Simpson’s number one rusher and number two passer.

Playing at the Lake Theater is, “Killer’s Three,” starring Robert Walker, Diane Varsi and Dick Clark.

70 Years Ago

November 1948

The break-ins on the North Shore have been pretty serious to the community.  Should teenage boys be given the family car any evening to just go any place?  The findings of the police department in these break-ins have pointed a long finger at the carelessness of parents.

An announcement was made this week by Santa’s helper, Barry Plumb, that Santa will come to town Dec. 23 at 9:30 a.m.  He will have a police escort and meet the children in front of the Lake Theatre.  The Christmas committee consists of Plumb, Archie Larson and Clare Mother.

The 20’x80’ reproduction of the “Nativity” of the First Congregational Church has caused considerable comment.  Under three large floodlights, the picture is set off by a border of evergreens.

100 Years Ago

November 1918

Culver Ice Co. has a crew of men working at the lake shore, getting ready to harvest the annual ice crop when the time arrives.

On account of the flu epidemic, news is scarce this week.  Not much going on in this ole’ town.

House for rent with electric lights and city water, $12 per month.  See Harry Freeman.

E.L. Luscomb, who lives about three miles north west of Clear Lake, suffered a painful and serious accident while operating a cornhusking machine.  Mr. Luscomb attempted to remove some blockage.  It was fortunate that he was able to stop the team immediately or his arm would have been torn from the socket.  His hand was terribly mangled and he is suffering excruciating pain.

Lloyd Butts, Dorothy Caulkins, David Henry and Esther Boggs enjoyed a nice cutter ride Saturday.
