(Above) 1968 Clear Lake basketball fans - Clear Lake fans whooped it up in 1968 as their heros, the Lions, beat Mason City, 74-69, in the first round of District action in the Mohawk gym.  The Lions boasted an 18-1 record, while the Mohawks had a 3-16 record.

March 1993

In an effort to bring jobs to the community, city officials announced they are negotiating the purchase of the Unisys building with the computer corporation.  The city’s purchase of the 194,000 square foot facility would make it more appealing to potential businesses, according to City Administrator Tom Lincoln.  The property is listed at $2.9 million.

Lynne Lorenzen, a former Ventura High School basketball standout and the nation’s all-time high school basketball scoring record holder, will be inducted into the state’s Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday evening.  She will return to Veteran’s Auditorium in Des Moines to take her place among the state’s best.  Lorenzen scored 6,792 points during her career and led her team to a State championship.

Clear Lake Head Girls Basketball Coach Kay Bacon submitted her resignation to the School Board.  She is stepping down after 19 years of coaching, 12 of this as head coach at Clear Lake.  The coach is ending her career on a high note, directing the 1992-93 team to a North Central Conference title, her fifth in 12 years at the helm.  Bacon finished with a 174-77 win-loss record.  She will continue as a physical education instructor at Clear Lake High School.

Jackie Sheller, of Mason City, and Tim Niess, of Osage, were the junior and senior winers in the Ventura Talent Contest held Saturday in Ventura.  Sheller performed a tap dance routine, while Niess sang the ballad, “Danny Boy.”

The Broadway musical, “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” will be presented at the Surf Ballroom on Wednesday, March 17.  The musical rolls through the early days of Holly’s life in Lubbock, Texas, to the historic final concert at the Surf Ballroom on Feb. 2, 1959.  The cost of tickets is $30.  Up-front tickets are available for $100.

Brian and Rita Waldron, of Ventura, announce the birth of daughter, Janice Carlene.  She was born Feb. 28, 1993.

Al Budolfson, of Clear Lake, was inducted as a “Legend of the Past” at Iowa State University during halftime of the Iowa State vs. Kansas State basketball game.  Budolfson was a two-time all-conference player and was a two year co-captain for the Cyclones.  He played for the 1940-41 conference champions of the then “Big 6.”  To be considered a “legend,” a former ISU player must have competed on a team which won a conference championship.  The player must also have received all-conference or all-American honors.

The Clear Lake boys basketball team had their best shooting night of the year in their first-round district game with Forest City.  The Lions shot 70 percentage from the field, but the Indians were a little better and came away with a 69-66 win.  Paul Bruns had 30-points in the contest for the Lions.

The Clear Lake girls basketball team finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record in the North Central Conference and placed three players on the first team in the final season of six-on-six basketball in the NCC.  Kathy Walls was a unanimous first team selection at forward.  The senior led the Lions with a 26.1 scoring average. Senior Kendra Berge was also a unanimous first team selection at guard.  She led the team in steals, averaging 3.5 a game.  Laura Haugen was a first team selection at forward.  She was the team’s leading shooter from both the field and the line.

March 1968

A “Farmers Spring Festival” has been scheduled for Monday night, April 1, at the Surf Ballroom.  The festival, which is sponsored by the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, was traditionally held as an autumn event in Clear Lake, but no ballroom facilities were available last fall.  Farmers and their wives will be invited to the festival by local businessmen.

A 100-year-old house at 413 S. Shore Dr. was put up on skids and moved to a new foundation at 713 S. 3rd St.  The home has several stained glass windows, beautiful woodwork and an elevator from the kitchen-dining area on the lower level to the first floor.

The Clear Lake boys steamed past the Humboldt Wildcats 71-47 for their 13th straight North Central Conference triumph of the season.  Steve Grabinski enjoyed the best night of the season with six rebounds and 22-points.

Specials for the week at Ben Franklin include:  Cannon extra large bath towels, 68¢; toaster, $6.99; Westclox alarm clock, $2.57; double knee denim jeans, $2.77; and lined plastic drapes, new colors and patterns, 47¢ a pair.

March 1943

Pfc. 1/C Howard Oehlert has arrived from Moore Field, Tex. to visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Oehlert.

Otis Hammond recently returned to Glendale, Calif., after spending a five day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Hammond.  Hammond is employed at Lockheed Aircraft.

Marvin Floy is recovering from a fractured arm which he received while cranking a tractor.

Mrs. Loyal Cox and baby have gone to Los Angeles, Calif., to visit Mr. Cox, who is with the Marines at San Diego.

100 Years Ago

February 1918

The knitting machine purchased by Mrs. Prince and Mrs. Davenport for use of the local Red Cross has given excellent satisfaction.  They have knit several pair of socks.

Nice doll wigs at reasonable prices are available at Theodosia Hendy’s Beauty Parlor.  They also have good switches.

To break his only arm was the misfortune that came to H.J. Lundy, who fell from the haymow.

The fire department was called to the Ed Cornell home on East Main St.  The barn was completely consumed.  The fire company experienced difficulty in getting to the scene as the gas tank on the fire truck was discovered to be empty as the boys left the station.

If an old calendar seems too pretty to destroy, paste a piece of sandpaper over the pad and use it to scratch matches on.
