(Above) All-Vets comes down in 1997 - The big debate of 1997 was the fate of the former All-Veteran’s Social Center clubhouse.  The debate ended on Feb. 11, when crews demolished the old clubhouse, which was once a grand gathering place.

25 Years Ago • March 1997

The C.L.E.A.R. Project has an informative video that will be delivered to all businesses and residents in the watershed area.  The video is 22 minutes long and production of it was funded by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  The video will inform people of the value of the lake, help the residents to understand why the lake suffers severe summertime algae blooms, motivate citizens to take responsible individual actions on their property to improve the water in the lake and to demonstrate what specific actions will keep nutrients (plant food or fertilizers) out of the lake.

The Surf Ballroom has announced the return of Three Dog Night, live in concert on Friday, April 25.  The group has recorded many hits, such as “One,” “Shambala,” Mama Told Me Not to Come,” and “Joy to the World.”

Ryan and Julie Forsythe are the new owners of Krieger’s Clear Lake Floral and Garden Inc.

Natural gas customers of IES Utilities Inc. will see the natural gas portion of their bills drop by about 13 percent as the cost of gas supples falls across the country.

Tamarik James Lee is the newly adopted son of Jim Lee and Kandice Bienfang-Lee of Clear Lake.  He was born Feb. 21, 1997.  He is he couple’s first child.

Shelly King, of the Sandbar Restaurant and Lounge, 211 N. 4th St., became a member of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kara Barrett was named to the 1997 Iowa All State High School Hockey Cheerleaders squad.  Kara, a senior from Clear Lake High School, is a cheerleaders on the Mason City Mohawk Hockey Team.

The Clear Lake wrestlers nearly pulled off the upset in taking No. 1 rated Independence to the final match before falling 32-26 in the championship of the Class 2A State Dual Meet Saturday in Cedar Rapids.  Picking up wins for the Lions were Ben Frederick, Alex Ibarra, Andy Thompson, Josh Baker, Justin Washburn, Dustin DenHartog.

The Clear Lake boys basketball team was not able to beat the state-contending Algona Bulldogs to prolong the season.  The final score was 66-43.  Senior Tom Zirbel led the team in points and rebounds.  He had 17 points and six rebounds.  Nate Carney added eight points and four steals.

Ventura’s Jared Rings earned First Team All-North Star Conference honors.  Isaac Larsen and Aaron Rothrock both were named to the Honorable Mention list on the boys side.  On the girls’ side, Angie Avery was a Second Team selection.  Emily Hiscock’s and Alicia Peterson were Honorable Mention choices.

The Barrel Drive-In is now open serving their famous broasted chicken.

50 Years Ago • March 1972

Five Clear Lake students earned I ratings during District Individual Speech Contest held Saturday in Clear Lake.  Awarded 1’s were Jennifer Hoefer, Sue Koehler, Shirley Koehler, Jan Zuehlke and Mark Doebel.

World Day of Prayer, which is the international celebration of faith and unity among Christian women, will be held in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 1:30 p.m. on March 3.

The Clear Lake Lions advanced to the Class AA District finals Thursday night, having defeated Forest City, 66-54 in the last round of the tournament Monday night. Paul Schoneman was high scorer in the game with 17 points.  Richard Chapman added 15 points.

There was a shooting and robbery on Main Ave. Sunday afternoon but not the type you might think.  A film was being made as a project for the Clear Lake American Literature class.

75 Years Ago • February 1947

The city council voted to bring a new section into the city limits.  What is popularly known as the South Shore section was added after it was requested by property owners.  Water and sewer will be extended to the new patrons as soon as the pipe is available.

Bill Martin, forward on the C.L.H.S. team before he left for the army airdrops in 1943, is now a forward on the Beta Theta Pi intra-mural basketball team at the State University of Iowa.

Loyal Cox, who fractured both bones in his leg, returned to his home.  He was hurt at Hintzmann’s Mink Ranch when his horse slipped and fell on him.

Archie Larson is planning to install a number of Bendix washers in his building and take in people’s washing,  He plans to start in early spring.

 99 Years Ago • February 1923

The Lions had their cooling fountain basin in the park filled last week.  The basin is 14 ft. square and held about 300 big cakes of ice.  The ice last year soon melted but this year a new plan will be used and it is hoped it will last all summer.

A half-dozen or more Clear Lake citizens are under indictment for gambling. Some paid a fine, others will let their case go to court.

Last Sunday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage Iona Stites and Mr. May Miner were united in marriage.  The bride grew to young womanhood in this vicinity and is a young lady of refinement and unusual ability.  The groom has a fine reputation as a raiser of hogs. In this line, he and his brother are experts and very successful.
